Doris Harris

Doris Fisher Harris joyfully saw the face of her beloved Savior, on September 3, 2026. She was a long-time member of the Bob Jones University Speech Department where she taught for 54 years, pastor's wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother and author.

Reared in Augusta, Michigan she was the daughter of the late Harry Blair Fisher and Alice Smith Fisher. She enjoyed a wonderful typical mid-western childhood of country life. She graduated with honors from Augusta High School and attended Bob Jones University with degrees in Speech Education and Platform Arts. She did advance work at Western Michigan University. She estimated that she had taught more students than would fill Rodeheaver Auditorium on campus. She always said, "her classroom was her throne".

Married for 54 years to Rev. Bob R. Harris she was a faithful pastor’s wife at Center Roads Baptist Church in Bladenboro, N. Gospel Mission, Augusta, Georgia, Trinity Bible Church, Marysville, Tenn. and Faith Baptist Church in Boiling Springs, S. C. The late Rev. Harris served Bob Jones University for 47 years as history professor in addition to his preaching.

Mrs. Harris was a Christian free-lance writer and published over 700 articles, stories and plays. She was a member of Bob Jones University Classic players, and her favorite roles were Maria in Twelfth Night and the nurse in Romeo and Juliet. She was a Vespers director who felt humbled by the opportunity to touch so many lives. She frequently performed in and directed Vespers programs on campus. She also appeared in Unusual Films alongside Rev. Harris, and the two often performed together in Shakespearean plays. She frequently lectured to local and Christian educational groups. She was selected as an Outstanding Personality of the South and received several honors for writing. A play-writing competition is named in her honor. She was a member of the Authors Guild.

Survivors include her beloved students, daughter Debra Sue Harris of Rockwall, Texas, a son, Dr. David Blair Harris, a "daughter-in-love” Connie Nix Harris and grandchildren: Jordan David Harris, Allison Elizabeth Harris and Dylan Blair Harris of Clarks Summit. Along with great grandchildren Calvin and Cordelia Harris of Rochester, Minnesota.

She was predeceased by her husband of 54 years Rev. Harris, a sister, Gurski of Alma, Michigan and brothers Jesse Fisher of Oxford, Wisconsin and Wayne Fisher of Watertown, Wisconsin.

Mrs. Harris loved homemaking, teaching and writing. She was an avid reader and loved poetry. She said her hobby was "Memory making".

“Think of stepping on shore and finding it Heaven! Of taking hold of a hand, and finding it Heaven. Of waking up and finding it Home!”

Visitation will be held at Mackey Funerals and Cremations at Woodlawn Memorial Park, 1 Pine Knoll Drive, Greenville, SC 29609, on Friday, September 11, 2026, from 4:00 pm to 8:00 pm.

A funeral will be held in War Memorial Chapel on the campus of Bob Jones University, 1700 Wade Hampton Blvd, Greenville, SC 29614, on Saturday, September 12, 2026, at 11:00 am.

Committal will take place at Woodlawn Memorial Park, 1 Pine Knoll Drive, Greenville, SC 29609, immediately following the service.
