Born in Brooklyn, N.Y. to Harry and Freda Podolsky, she was charged with looking after her younger sister, Eleanor, and baby brother, Jerome, from the age of seven, the beginning of a life committed to caring for others. Competent, efficient, self-educated and cultured, her skills were in high demand in early ‘40’s NYC, including as the secretary to the head of the Metropolitan Opera, until she met the young serviceman, Howard Gold. It was love at first sight. They spent three hours together prior to their marriage in January of 1943 and were together for 71 years until Howard’s death in 2014.
Taking numerous jobs throughout the war while her husband served abroad, she and Howard settled in Glens Falls, N.Y in the late ‘40’s, where their son, Avram, and daughter, Robin, were born. In 1962, Howard’s work brought them to Greenville, the city that Dorothy truly loved and quickly made her own. In the late ‘60’s, she was instrumental in helping many young disadvantaged women build new lives for themselves through her work with Women in Community Service and Job Corp. She served in dozens of leadership positions with Temple of Israel Sisterhood and the National Council of Jewish Women, dedicating long hours to charitable works and social action. In her mid-sixties, she secured her real estate license, helping countless families and individuals find homes, often moving to Greenville for the first time, until she retired from Coldwell Banker at almost 90 years of age.
Dorothy Gold is survived by her children, Avram Gold and his wife, Christina Gold, of Pasadena, CA; Robin Mitchell Joyce and her husband, Michael Joyce, of Nashville, TN; granddaughter Haley Clare Joyce Sharber and her husband, William Sharber; grandson James Gold Joyce; her hundreds of friends and all those whose lives have been better for having known her.
A Memorial Service will be held Monday, December 18th at 3:00 PM at Temple of Israel. A reception hosted by the family will follow.
The family requests donations to Temple of Israel in lieu of flowers.
Arrangements under the direction of Mackey Mortuary, GREENVILLE, SC.
