E. Thomas (Tom) Butts

October 24, 1930 – June 29, 2026
Obituary of E. Thomas (Tom) Butts
IN THE CARE OF

Mackey Funerals and Cremations at Woodlawn Memorial Park

E. Thomas (Tom) Butts went Home to be with his Lord June 29, 2026, at the age of 95. He was a beloved father, father-in-law, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend to many.

Tom was born October 24, 1930, in Thomaston, GA, to John O. and Mattie Lou Butts and was older brother to Martha Belle. He came to faith in Christ as a teenager and was strongly influenced in his walk with the Lord by his Aunt Mary Butts.

Tom moved to Greenville, SC, in 1948 to attend Bob Jones University. Following his training, he served at BJU in various capacities and was known for his strong work ethic and desire to serve. He met his wife, Millie, at the university, and they were married for 54 years. Tom adored “Muv” and loved and served her faithfully and beautifully as he emulated Christ’s love for the church. Their two daughters, Tricia and Melinda, are overwhelmed with gratitude to have had him as their beloved father.

Tom faithfully served the Lord at Hampton Park Baptist Church. Additionally, he was heavily involved in his political party, sat on the Greenville City Civil Service Commission, and was on the board of the Harold Jennings Foundation.

He was the Director of the Office of Student Services at BJU for nearly 50 years. His work there included helping students find jobs on and off campus, overseeing payroll for on-campus jobs, and assisting students with their state and federal taxes.

He loved working in his beautiful yard and was known for his joy in sharing plants from his garden. He is also remembered for his humility, his servant’s heart, and his readiness to help where needed. His daily pursuit of God allowed him to demonstrate God’s love as he invested in others.

He is survived by his daughters, Tricia Oss and Melinda Henderson (Andy); five grandchildren—Derek Oss and Kirsten Meers (Justin), and Drew, Austin, and Alyssa Henderson; and great-grandchildren—Evie & Archie Meers.

A Celebration of Life service will be held at Hampton Park Baptist Church (Greenville, SC). Visitation begins at 3:00 followed by a service at 4:00.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the following ministries.

-Hampton Park Baptist Church—Missions Fund

-Bob Jones University—Timothy Fund
