Evelyn Woods Dobson, 89, passed away peacefully on Friday, January 6, 2023. She was born in Ridgeland, South Carolina in Jasper County on July 28, 1933 to the late Wesley and Ariminta Ginn Woods. Evelyn married her sweetheart Jack Oliver Dobson on March 2, 1951, in Hampton, South Carolina and then graduated from Grays School shortly after. They were married 39 years.
Evelyn was one of the early members of Woodruff Road Christian Church where she served as a youth sponsor, worked in the nursery, and served on the fellowship, decorating and Bread of Life committees.
She spent more than 55 years of her life as a hairdresser at her shop the Beauty Hut on Augusta Road. Even after closing her business, her clients came to her house to have their hair styled.
The matriarch of the Dobson crew was loved by her community and also loved to spend time with her family. On Sunday after church, you could find Evelyn serving her family lunch around the kitchen table. She loved her grandchildren and played a consistent, significant role in their lives, setting an example for them of what the love of family looks like. She loved putting together puzzles and playing scrabble and dominos with them.
Her legacy as a disciple of Christ, wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother (best known as Amma), and aunt, exemplifies her values and all she stood for that was right in this world.
She was predeceased by her husband, Jack Oliver Dobson; son, Lynn Allen Dobson and son-in-law, Steve Freeman, grandchildren: Stephen Bradley Freeman and Jody Michael Freeman; brothers: Collins Woods (Lucille), Harrison Woods (Dot), Monty Woods (Pearl) sister, Mary Weaver (Norman); brother-in-law, Roland Smith.
Evelyn is survived by her daughters: Joanne Wynette Freeman and Patricia Dobson Martin (Gary); grandchildren: Christopher Allen Dobson, AJ Morrow, Ashley Jason “Jay” Freeman (Trina), Olivia Martin Taylor (Zach), Justin William Martin (Liz), Judith Loraine “Lori” Weaver (Jonathan), Shiann Nichole Plumier, Alexis Hope Givens, Ethan Andrew Givens; great grandchildren: Jack Freeman, Brad Freeman, Mills Freeman, Kyla Freeman, Camden Gosnell, Hunter Weaver, and Walker Weaver; brother, Freddie Woods; sisters, Sarah Mallard and Jackie Smith.
