Floyd spent his youth in Parrish, Alabama, then served his country in the U.S. Navy. He survived a harrowing experience when his plane crash-landed in the Pacific Ocean. He graduated from the University of Alabama with a B.S. in Industrial Engineering and was a lifelong Alabama football fanatic.
He shared his life with his wife of over seventy years, Nancy Humphries, and their two children, David Elwyn and Leslie Carol. He was the perfect “Dodaddy,” always ready for an adventure with his grandchildren, Evans Bennett, McCauley Williamson (Trent), and Zachary Woods. Together, they created many unforgettable memories.
Floyd was blessed with three great-granddaughters: Bennett, Mary James, and Margaret Daphne. Also surviving are his son-in-law Mac Bennett, sisters-in-law Pat Barnes and Paula Vickers, and nieces and nephews. Floyd was preceded in death by his parents, Delma and Floyd Woods, infant brother Philip, sister Gail, and son David.
He spent his career in the apparel industry in Greenville and Columbia, SC, during its glory days. Ever the engineer, he loved volunteering with Habitat for Humanity and inventing home projects. Nothing was too complex for him to conquer. He also delivered Meals on Wheels and was a member of Buncombe Street Methodist Church. Family, football, and faith were the hallmarks of his life.
He will be laid to rest next to his beloved son, David.
A memorial service will be held on Thursday, October 1, at Mackey Funerals at Woodlawn Memorial Park, 1 Pine Knoll Dr., Greenville, SC 29609. Funeral will begin at 12:00 pm, with committal and military honors at 1:00 pm. Guests are invited to greet the family at a reception following the committal.
