

George Arthur Holzberger, 89, of Greenville, SC, died on Tuesday, October 7, 2014 at Open Arms Hospice at the McCall House in Simpsonville, SC. Born in Paterson, NJ on March 29, 1925, he was the youngest son of Anna and George Holzberger. George graduated in 1942 from Eastside HS in Paterson, NJ. In WWII, he served as a Navy Corpsman, assigned to the 4th Marine Division, Maui, Hawaii. He received the Presidential Unit Citation medal for his participation in the capture of Saipan and Tinian and recognition for his medical service during the battle of Iwo Jima. He attended the Traffic Managers Institute, New York, NY, and received degrees in Commerce and Interstate Law. He served as Manager of Sales & Service with the P&N Railroad in their NY office, and, after a series of mergers, CSX Corporation transferred him to Greenville, SC, and appointed him Manager of Sales & Service to serve part of the South Region and Tennessee. He was a member of the Top 20 Club and chaired a Chamber of Commerce committee that promoted the diversification of economic development in the Piedmont Region. He was President of the Piedmont Traffic Club and former Rotary Club, a member of the Poinsett Club, and a Dale Carnegie alumnus. He was a member of St. Michael’s Lutheran Church, where he served on the church council for 6 years and also served 7 years as President of Saints Alive. George is survived by his wife of 12 years, Barbara Tomlinson Holzberger of Greenville, a step-son Lee Tomlinson (Debbie) of Simpsonville; brothers: John Holzberger (Ena) of Butler, NJ, and Herb Holzberger of Fairfield, CT; and sister, Dorothy Holmes of Ramsey, NJ. He was predeceased by his first wife of 52 years, Elenore F. Holzberger, but is survived by their daughter, Jan E. Holzberger of Mt. Pleasant, SC; 2 sons: Brion K. Holzberger (Susan) of Easley, SC, and Paul L. Holzberger (Christy) of Greenville, SC; and 2 grandsons: Daniel K. Holzberger (Lindsey), of Greenville, SC, and Eric J. Holzberger, of Mt. Pleasant, SC. Visitation will be held in Greenville at St. Michael’s Lutheran Church on Monday, October 13th @ 11 AM followed by the funeral service @ 12:30 PM with the entombment later in the day at Woodlawn Memorial Park.
