

He was born on June 23, 1930, in Clifton Forge, VA, to parents George D. Leffel, Sr. and Eleanor Bateman Leffel. Jack spent most of his life in the Harrisonburg, VA area. He earned his undergraduate degree at Madison College after serving a tour of active duty in the Marines. The majority of his career life was spent teaching middle and high school, earning a doctorate along the way. He retired from the Harrisonburg City Public School system in Virginia. He spent the last 15 years of his life in South Carolina, where he moved with his wife, Patricia. He continued to substitute teach there for several years.
Jack met so many people in his life that he seemed to know someone wherever he went. In public, he was often greeted by former students from many years in the past. There were often quarters in his pockets, to give to children who could answer his math or history questions. Gideon International held a special place in his heart, with whom he served for many years. Jack was known as a friendly and kind man.
He was preceeded in death by his by his sisters Bettie Leffel and Peggy Groff. Surviving him is his wife of 23 years, Patricia Brown Leffel, his sister Marie Richards, his children Tim Leffel and Angela Leffel. Also surviving him are five grandchildren: Alina, Courtney, Dallas, Katelyn, and Conner.
A celebration of life will be held at Taylor’s First Baptist Church, in Taylors, S.C. on Thursday, January 25, at 1 p.m. A graveside service will be held at Woodbine Cemetery in Harrisonburg, VA at a later date.
