George Edward McLaughlin, Jr age 77, after a valiant battle with cancer, departed his earthly home to be with his Lord and Savior on December 1, 2024 in his home in South Carolina. Born in St. Louis, Missouri to George and Frances (Krekeler) McLaughlin, he was the husband of Laura deFrancesco McLaughlin.
George was an alumnus of the University of Notre Dame where he earned his BBA in 1969 and of Indiana University where he earned his MBA in 1972. He and his father owned and operated McLaughlin Ford Mercury in New Milford, CT. He later established and ran McLaughlin Business Associates, LLC which was a real estate investment company.
George enjoyed playing and watching golf and cheering for his beloved Fighting Irish Football team on Saturdays each fall. The University of Connecticut Lady Huskies basketball team was his winter sports enjoyment.
George loved leadership opportunities which led him to run for public office six times in Connecticut. He served 9 years on the Board of Finance in Brookfield, CT. After moving to New Milford, CT he served for 7 years (6 years as chairman) on that town’s Board of Finance. When he retired from those positions, his real estate endeavors lead him to roles on condominium boards where he served as president on two different boards.
Due to skills acquired while working for a framing company in the summers during college, George was quite comfortable around power tools. He used these skills in working around the house and helping friends and neighbors with their projects. There was no task that he was afraid to attempt.
George was predeceased by his parents and his grandson Ian. He is survived by his wife, Laura, the mother of his children Georgia Ferguson, his three children Sean (Jayne) of Spokane, WA; Erin Roark (Richard) of Philadelphia, PA and Megan Beaubien (Louis) of Halifax, NS and his six grandchildren Maggie, Josie, Evan, Lucy, Molly, and Alec. He adored and was very proud of all his children and grandchildren.
A celebration of Life will take place on Friday, December 6 at 12:30 PM at Covenant Presbyterian Church, 4500 SC 86, Easley, SC 20642. Interment will be in Sherman, CT at the convenience of the family.
In lieu of flowers, the family prefers contributions to the Calvary Home for Children (110 Calvary Home Circle, Anderson, SC 29621) or the Tunnel to Towers Foundation (2361 Hylan Blvd., Staten Island, NY 10306).
