Gregg Scott Monson went peacefully into the arms of Jesus on June 24, 2025, at the age of 80. He died, at home, surrounded by his loving family. Gregg was born on October 11, 1944, in Galesburg, Illinois. His father, Rex Monson, was a B-17 pilot who survived 25 missions in the European theater of World War II. Rex married Jeanne Scott, whom he had met prior to deployment. After Rex died of Leukemia in 1962, Jeanne met a godly bachelor named Sam Olson. Ironically, Rex had met Sam in their mutual military assignments and referred to Sam as “The Big Swede” from Galesburg, IL. Jeanne and Sam married in 1966, in Illinois, and they resided on Sam’s farm, in Gilson, until they moved to be with family in Greenville, SC in 1992.
Gregg met his future wife, Sandra Lockwood, in their freshman year at Bob Jones University. They were married after college and Gregg enlisted in the U.S. Army, completed basic training, and finished Officer Candidate School. He was then deployed to Vietnam. After leaving the service Gregg and Sandy settled in Greenville, SC. Gregg was a real estate manager for the Liberty Life Corporation and later became manager of the West Gate Mall in Spartanburg, SC. His retirement job was at DeVoe Paint Center, where he enjoyed making many friends who came through the store. Gregg was preceded in death by his wife, Sandy, of 55 years, and is survived by his sons, Stephen (Jackie) Monson of Greenville, SC, and Jon (Erika) Monson of Hoover, AL, and a sister, Chris Monson of Greenville, SC. The Monsons have four grandchildren, Sam, Blake, Megan, and Luke.
There will be a private funeral service and burial, with military honors, at M.J. “Dolly” Cooper Veterans Cemetery, in Anderson, SC, on Wednesday July 2, 2025 with Dr. Larry Reesor (brother-in-law) officiating.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Miracle Hill Shepherd’s Gate, 11 Regency Hill Drive, Greenville, SC 29607.
