Greta Juanita Campbell, 94, of Greenville, South Carolina, passed away August 14, 2025, at Greenville Post Acute after several years of declining health. Born in Clemson, SC, March 20, 1931, she was the daughter of William Marcus Campbell and Mary Ellen Miller Campbell.
Greta was a licensed minister in the International Pentecostal Holiness Church and until her confinement, attended Holmes Memorial Church in Greenville. At the young age of 15, she gave her heart to the Lord and began using her gift of singing for His glory as she sang in many churches and revivals with her siblings.
By the age of 20, she knew God was calling her to preach the Gospel and in 1952 she was licensed by the Upper South Carolina Conference (currently Spirit Life Ministries) of the Pentecostal Holiness Church. Also that year, Pat Welch, a gifted pianist and singer, joined Greta and they became an evangelistic team, ministering in many churches throughout the southeast.
In 1961, Ramona Ready joined Greta and Pat, forming The Greta Campbell Trio. They traveled across the country singing and preaching until 1973, during which time they recorded eleven long play albums. After that, as a duet, Greta and Pat recorded two albums and then a CD with Greta's brother, Willie Campbell, who had then become part of The Greta Campbell Trio.
After 20 years of ministering in many churches, a new door opened for Greta to begin a television ministry. In 1972, Greta hosted the first Niteline program aired on Dove Broadcasting's WGGS-TV16, a station in Greenville, SC founded by Rev. Jimmy and Joanne Thompson. That first program came on the air with The Greta Campbell Trio singing "We've Come This Far By Faith," which became the theme song for the station for many years. Greta continued hosting Niteline on Thursday evenings for 43 years until she retired in 2016. Only God knows how many lives Greta Campbell impacted during the 74 years since she said "Yes" to His call upon her life!
Greta is survived by her "sister" and ministry co-worker, Patsy Welch; sister-in-law, Betty Campbell; niece, Gloria (Tony) Moon; nephews, Jeffrey Campbell and Brian (Kim) Campbell; great nieces and nephews; and Pat's nieces and nephews who are like family.
In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her siblings, Elizabeth (Roy) Wardlaw, Leila Inez (Phillip) Hart, Arthur (Angeline) Campbell, William "Willie" Campbell, and Mitch (Judy) Campbell.
The family deeply appreciates the loving care Greta received the past year and a half at Greenville Post Acute and by VIA Health Partners.
A visitation for Greta will be held Thursday, August 21, 2025 at 1:00 PM at Mackey Funerals and Cremations at Woodlawn Memorial Park, 1 Pine Knoll Drive, Greenville, SC 29609, followed by the funeral service at 2:00 PM and committal at 3:00 PM in the park.
