

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Guye Ellen Matthews, aged 85, who went to be with the Lord surrounded by her family on August 29, 2024. She was a beloved mother, grandmother, great grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend.
Guye Ellen was known for her constant acts of kindness, service and encouragement to her family, friends, neighbors, co-workers, and church family. She was an Avon rep for years in her neighborhood and from that participated in community charity house to house fundraising. She worked many years at both Bob Jones University and Southside Christian School. Affectionately known as Grammy, she loved and served her family and grandchildren and great-grand grandchildren. They rise up and call her Blessed.
She was predeceased by her mother and father, Dr. and Mrs. R. K. Johnson and her husband Dr. Jay Matthews. She is survived by her three children, Barbara (Alan) Wilson, Carol (Barry) Formanack, and John (Erin) Matthews; her 7 grandchildren, Jason Wilson, Zach Wilson, Brandon Formanack, Christine (Formanack) Heath, Kate Matthews, John Matthews, and Brianna Wilson; her 2 great grandchildren, Hunter Wilson and Parker Wilson; and her sister Corretta (Lew) Grass.
Funeral Service is Tuesday September 3, at noon at Morningside Baptist Church on Pelham Road. Visitation is also at Morningside from 10:30 AM to 11:45 AM. A private family committal service will follow the funeral service.
