Helen was born to the late Geanie and C.B. Callaham in Fair Play, South Carolina, on November 24, 1928. She was one of six children and dearly loved each and every one of her siblings and the fun life they had growing up in the country.
Helen and her beloved husband, Allister G. Smith, were married in Hartwell, Georgia. A marriage that lasted 59 years until his passing in 2007. They were blessed with three children: two sons and a daughter. Helen was a devoted and loving mother who helped raise her children with patience, love and kindness. She was an outstanding cook, loved to crochet, quilt and read. In the early years of marriage she enjoyed helping Al with his business and building a home. They enjoyed having horses and traveling. They also loved spending time with family and friends at the lake house they had at Santee Cooper. Many fun times to be had by all while fishing on the lake. When the grandchildren came along she was in her element! Loving and spoiling them was her joy. They all had a constant source of love and attention from both grandparents. When Al got sick with cancer she was his constant nurse. She took excellent care of him. Then the tables turned, she suffered several strokes and he became her nurse until he passed. She then went to live with her daughter in NC and spent the past 14 years there.
Her entire life, Helen was known for her kind, loving and soft-spoken demeanor and never spoke ill of anyone she met. She is dearly missed by her loved ones, who celebrate the fact that she is now at peace with her Creator in heaven.
Helen is preceded in death by her husband, Allister G. Smith, and her son, Jerry A. Smith.
She is survived by her son, Larry Smith of Simpsonville, South Carolina; her daughter, Susan Bovender and husband Bill of Winston-Salem, North Carolina; her daughter-in-law, Jan Smith of Greenville, South Carolina; her grandchildren Sean Smith, Shannon Waters, Jennifer Patat, Kelsey Bracken, Sarah Lillard and Patrick Welch; several great grandchildren; her loving sister, Carolyn Leak of Anderson, South Carolina; and many loved nieces and nephews
