Jacque was born Jacqueline Joy Boiter on June 26, 1955, in Anderson, South Carolina, while her father was attending Clemson University. Over the course of her life she called both Carolinas home, living at various times in Duncan, Sullivan's Island, Belmont, and Asheville, before eventually settling in Piedmont, SC, where she spent her final years and, for the last year of her life, lived with her daughter, who cared for her.
She was the daughter of James William Boiter and Joyce Elaine (McLemore) Boiter. Jackie helped care for her parents for many years, particularly her mother, until her mother's death in 2007. Her father passed in 2019.
Jacque graduated from the Mary Black School of Nursing with her RN in 1987 and went on to work as a nurse in hospitals, dialysis, and home health care — work she brought great compassion to. In the late 1990s, significant health challenges, including Crohn's disease and diabetes, led her to retire on disability, and she later moved to Piedmont to be close to her daughter, herself a healthcare professional, who could help care for her.
She was the devoted mother of two children, Elaine Lindsay Sloan and John William Sloan.
Above every accomplishment, Jackie's greatest pride was her family. She was an extraordinary mother and grandmother — the kind who talked to children like people, took a real interest in what they loved, and was everyone's biggest cheerleader, from her own children and grandchildren to her nieces and nephews. She instilled in her children a lifelong love of reading and a sense that the world could still be a little magical: she sewed unforgettable Halloween costumes every year and once built her daughter a Barbie castle by hand for Christmas. Her daughter credits her, fully, with teaching her how to be a good mother.
Jacque’s curiosity never stopped growing. She was a lifelong reader of everything from science fiction and fantasy to classic literature, and her taste in music ranged just as widely — from the Beatles, the Allman Brothers, Neil Young, and the Rolling Stones in her earlier years, to Celtic music, and later to anime themes, J-rock (she was a devoted fan of L’arc~en~Ciel), and, in her final years, Chinese traditional and pop music. She had once dreamed of returning to school to study history - a passion she shared with her son-in-law. She never got the chance to travel the way she'd always wanted to, but she carried her curiosity about the world to the very end.
Jacque is survived by her children, Elaine Lindsay Sloan (David George Pruett, III – deceased) and John William Sloan (Jocelyn Noel-Kennedy Sloan); her grandchildren, Lindsay Pruett, Madeline “Maddie” Sloan, and Emma Sloan; her brother, James "Jamey" Boiter, and his wife, Katherine Boiter, and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents and her son-in-law.
A private family memorial service will be held on Saturday, October 31, 2026, at the Sloan family cemetery, where Jacque’s ashes will be laid to rest. Arrangements are entrusted to Mackey Funerals and Cremations.
Jacque's greatest legacy is one of love — a mother and grandmother whose warmth, patience, and quiet strength shaped everyone lucky enough to know her, and whose family will carry her forward in everything they do.
