Jim was an ardent conservationist who loved and worked mightily for the protection and preservation of the rivers, forests and cold water streams of Upstate South Carolina, Western North Carolina and East Tennessee. He was past president of Mountain Bridge Chapter of Trout Unlimited and current SC counsel Representative for the national organization of TU. He was also editor of the chapter newsletter, an active volunteer with Project Healing Waters (in partnership with Wounded Warriors) and an enthusiastic participant in Greenville County Schools’ Trout in the Classroom program. Jim also taught fly fishing at Wofford College in their Continuing Ed Dept.
There was nothing Jim loved better than fly fishing his favorite streams. He was an accomplished fisherman, but with Jim it was always “catch and release!” Jim leaves a lasting positive legacy on the conservation and enjoyment of our region’s beautiful natural environment.
Jim grew up in Mobile, AL, graduating from Murphy High School. He was a 1965 graduate of the University of Alabama with a degree in mechanical engineering. His career was spent in industrial engineering, construction and maintenance management. He worked for a number of companies, including US Steel, Yeargin, Raytheon, Harbert, and Fluor Daniel.
Jim leaves behind his loving wife Charlcie, his son Dr. Matt Hopkins (Keri) of Cody, WY, his daughter Leslie Mogil (Todd) of Houston, TX, and five grandchildren: Seamus Hopkins, Eli, Blythe and Owen Mogil, and Ariel Scott.
A Celebration of Jim’s Life will be held at The Mackey Mortuary, 311 Century Drive, Greenville, South Carolina on Saturday, Sept. 24 at 1 PM.
