October 19, 1947 – January 11, 2026
Obituary of James C. Nicholson, Jr.
IN THE CARE OF

Mackey Funerals and Cremations at Woodlawn Memorial Park

James Christopher Nicholson, Jr. passed away peacefully on January 11th, 2026, at the age of 78, at his home in Greer, SC, following a brave battle with cancer.

Jim was born in Brooklyn, NY, to loving parents James Sr. and Edna Nicholson. His life was defined by a commitment to service and a lifelong love of learning. After serving his country in the US Army for three years, including a tour in Vietnam, he earned a BA at Brooklyn College and completed his MBA at New York University. He built a successful career in banking and securities in both New York and London, eventually retiring from HSBC in 2011.

Retirement allowed him to pursue various passions, including a love of cycling. While living in the northeast, he served in various roles with the Bicycle Touring Club of North Jersey and helped co-found the New Jersey Bike & Walk Coalition. He became a Licensed Cycling Instructor and a Certified League Cycling Coach through the League of American Bicyclists.

Upon moving to the Carolinas, he further exercised his teaching gifts at the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI), where he developed and taught classes at The University of South Carolina Beaufort and Furman University on a wide range of topics, from history to musical theatre. As a teacher, he was admired for his sense of humor, engaging presentations, and meticulous research.

Friends and family knew Jim for his humor, kindness, intelligence, and reliable nature. He was predeceased by his son, Brian. He leaves behind his loving wife of 44 years, Susan; his son, Russell; his sister, Maggy Stotler and her husband Daren; his brother, John Nicholson and his wife Linda; and his niece and nephew, Justine DiRubbo and Shawn Nicholson.

Jim will be cremated with a service planned to take place on Hilton Head Island, SC. The family invites you to share your thoughts, stories, and photos here to help celebrate Jim’s life.
