

Joanne Garrott Long was born on August 4, 1929 in Peoria, IL to Ashton and Doris Johnson Garrott, who preceded her in death. She married Donald David Long on July 8, 1951. He also preceded her in death, as did her son, Douglas Donald Long, and brothers James K. (Barbara) Garrott and Jerry L. (Marile) Garrott.
She is survived by son David (Carol) Garrott Long and daughter-in-law Sally Long; four grandchildren, Ashley (Michael) Long Pastore, Sarah (Daniel) Long Assey, Ashton (Cassie) Long, and Matthew Long; and three great-grandchildren, Stella Joanne Pastore, Douglas Daniel Assey, and Walter Wayne Assey.
Joanne resided in Briny Breezes, FL during the winter months and Greenville, SC when it was warmer. She participated in many activities wherever she lived: tennis, bridge, chorus, and all kinds of volunteering.
Joanne received her B.S. and M.A. degrees from Bradley University. She taught at Hines Grade School from 1959 to 1967 before becoming a guidance counselor at Washington Community High School from 1967 to 1987.
She was a member of the United Presbyterian Church and served as a Deaconess, served with the UnityPoint Health – Proctor Service Auxiliary, and was a Charter Member of the Beta Eta Chapter of Gamma Phi Beta Sorority. She was a former member of the Willow Knolls Country Club, the Illinois Education Association, the National Education Association, the Washington Education Club, the Kiwanis Club (President of Peoria North), and the Bradley University Alumni Board.
Two services will be held in Joanne's honor. On Thursday, July 9th at 2:00pm, a memorial service will be held at The Woodlands at Furman, 1500 Trailhead Court, Greenville, SC 29617 (864-371-3100). On Monday, July 13th at 1:00pm, a funeral service will be held at Davison-Fulton Woodland Chapel, 2021 North University Street, Peoria, IL 61604 (309-688-5700).
Joanne will forever rest next to her husband in Parkview Memorial Park in Peoria, IL.
Her request was that, instead of flowers, gifts be sent to the Wheels O’ Time Museum in Dunlap, IL or Shriners Children’s. Links and information for these organizations can be found below.
