John attended Greenville High School and graduated from Furman University. He proudly served in the Army National Guard and was honorably discharged with the rank of First Lieutenant.
John enjoyed a long and successful career with Michelin, which allowed him to retire early. Following retirement, and seeking a new way to stay active and engaged, he joined the FedEx team in the Upstate. What began as a way to occupy his time became nearly a decade of dedicated service and valued friendships.
He was preceded in death by his parents, John Baylus Burns and Isabel Davis Burns; his beloved wife, Jean Reece Burns; and his sister-in-law, Elaine Burns.
John is survived by his son, Byron Burns (Carol); his daughter, Reesa Dawn Burns; his grandson, Austin Gurley; his brother, Larry Burns of North Carolina; his nephew, Ashley Burns; his niece, Rachelle Burns; and his great-nephew, Skylar Burns.
A visitation for John will be held on Tuesday, June 16, 2026, at Mackey Funerals and Cremations at Woodlawn Memorial Park, 1 Pine Knoll Drive, Greenville, SC 29609. Visitation will begin at 1:30 p.m., followed by a funeral service at 2:30 p.m. Burial will be private.

John will be remembered for his dedication to family, his strong work ethic, and the kindness and integrity he demonstrated throughout his life.
