Born in Greenville, Mark was the son of the late Carl F. and Rachel Sanders Merritt.
Mark attended high school at Christ Church Episcopal in Greenville, He attended University of Ohio, where he participated in first trials of stimulated muscle contractions for paralyzed limb mobility. He obtained his college degrees at Saint Andrews in Laurinburg, NC.
Mark loved to learn and stay current in world events. He traveled to Bermuda, enjoyed the train ride to New Orleans to celebrate Mardi Gras with friends. He loved the beach and mountains with family.
He leaves behind to sisters; a brother; two nieces and four nephews,
The family has planned a private service.
