John Andrew Steel, 77, went to meet his Lord on February 10 after a long struggle with declining health due to congestive heart failure. He is survived by his wife, Sharon, of 54½ years, as well as his children, John Mark (Deborah), Montevideo, Uruguay; Matthew (Sara), Greenville, SC; Shannah, Traveler’s Rest, SC; and Ruth, Taylors, SC; six grandchildren, Joshua, Elizabeth, Aaron, Ezra, Daniel James, and Micah; and a sister, Maudie (Jerry) Andresen, Malta, IL. He was preceded in death by his mother, Sarah Gardner Steel; a daughter, Sarah Elizabeth; his father, Elwyn Steel; two brothers, Robert and James (his twin); and a sister, Dorothy Komanich.
John served in the US Air Force with training in electronics and later graduated from Bob Jones University, having studied broadcast engineering and broadcast management. His goal for life was to be obedient to God’s leading and to bring glory to the Lord he loved and served.
During his years of ministry, he served at Caribbean Radio Lighthouse in Antigua, West Indies and radio station KEYY in Provo, Utah. He then served as an engineer for LINC (Live Interactive Network Classroom), a ministry of Bob Jones University. After taking an early retirement, he returned to Christian radio and served at Harbour Light of the Windwards in Carriacou, Grenada.
John was a member of Cornerstone Baptist Church and sang with the choir as long as his health permitted. His home was always open for hospitality as he and Sharon served together. He loved his Lord, his family, and life in general and will be greatly missed. As his health failed, he clung to Psalm 73:26: My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever.
A memorial service will be held at 11 am on Monday, February 21, 2022, at Cornerstone Baptist Church, with visitation at 10 am. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the FEBU/MEU Bible Institute scholarship fund, in care of EMU International (864-268-9267).
