Joseph Anthony Wintz, III (Tony) of Simpsonville, SC, age 76, passed away from heart failure on April 15, 2023, after a short hospital stay. Tony was born in Philadelphia, PA on July 25, 1946, to the late Joseph A. Wintz, Jr. and Jeannette Stoner Wintz.
After graduating from Germantown Academy (Philadelphia) in 1965, Tony obtained a BS in civil engineering from the University of Virginia in 1970. Tony and his wife Leigh settled in northern VA, and he began a long career as a Professional Engineer. He went on to graduate from George Washington University with a master’s degree in structural engineering and later earned his JD from George Mason University. His tenure with the American Society of Civil Engineers allowed him to use both his legal and engineering expertise. In 2004, Tony moved to Simpsonville, SC and joined the faculty of Clemson University in Construction Science and Management. He retired in 2016.
Tony’s love of education was not confined to the halls of academia. He was a life-long learner with a wide range of interests and hobbies. He taught himself Latin and Greek in order to better research original writings of ancient philosophy, culture and the scriptures. Other hobbies included ham radio, reading, and playing music. Playing piano, guitar or banjo was strictly for his own “amazement” he would say when asked to perform in front of others. He was a kind and generous man, a loving and involved father and grandfather, and a supportive husband. Like his father and grandfather, he was a Freemason and served as Worshipful Master of Recovery Lodge No. 31.
Tony is survived by his former wife of 38 years, Leigh Wintz, and their two married children, two grandchildren, his brother and sister in law: Son Joseph A. Wintz, IV and Paige Bost Wintz of Simpsonville, SC and their son, Joseph A. Wintz, V (Joey) a sophomore at Clemson. Daughter Carey Wintz, married to Damon Miller of Alexandria, VA and their son, Owen Miller, a sophomore at University of Victoria in BC Canada. Brother Robin Wintz and his wife Lori of Coopersburg, PA. Sister in law Julie Miller of Harrisburg, PA.
A memorial service will be held at 1:00 PM Sunday, April 23, 2023 at Mackey Funerals and Cremations at Century Drive.
