

Julia had a passion for life, with fierce dedication to her friends and family. She was a highly educated and accomplished woman, receiving her doctorate degree in Genetics from North Carolina State University in 1986. After post-doctoral training, she became Director of the Laboratory of Molecular Genetics at Ochsner Health in Louisiana, conducting research on cancer and hypertension. In the later part of her career, she was the Administrative Director of the Institute for Clinical Research at Ochsner, managing research clinical trials.
Julia led an active lifestyle; she loved swimming, dancing, hiking and biking. She was also an avid reader and lover of nature. Julia travelled extensively. Some of her favorite trips were to Italy, Morocco, and India. A native of Greece, she adored the clear blue waters surrounding the island of Aegina, where her sister and extended family reside. Julia was dedicated to her faith and spent many years serving tirelessly at the Vineyard Church in Kenner, Louisiana. Her friends and family have always appreciated her generosity, her positivity and her compassion for others.
Julia is survived by her husband, Jawed Alam, and her daughter, Lina Alam.
The visitation will be held at Mackey Funerals and Cremations, 311 Century Dr. Greenville, SC 29607, on Saturday, August 31, between 4:00 PM - 6:00 PM. Following the visitation, guests are invited to Julia's home at 105 River Walk Blvd, Simpsonville, SC, 29681 to celebrate her life. Light refreshments will be served. The burial will take place the following Sunday, September 1, 2024 at 1:00 PM, at the Godbee-Godby Family Cemetery, 5640 Old National Hwy, College Park, GA 30349.
Julia fought ovarian cancer with grace for over nine years. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Ovarian Cancer Research Alliance (OCRA).
