Born in Coulwood, Virginia, she was a daughter of the late Kemper and Gaye Combs. Mrs. Steele was a graduate of Virginia Women’s College where she earned her Bachelor’s Degree in Music Education. She was a high school music teacher and taught voice and speech. In 1948, Mrs. Steele developed music curriculums for first grade through high school in Russell County, Virginia. They were so successful, other schools adopted her curriculums. She was a pianist, organist, vocal soloist, and choir director in various churches in Virginia, North Carolina, Florida and Washington, DC. She was also a private piano and vocal instructor. Mrs. Steele loved playing the piano and wrote music, including an anthem that was performed by the Immanuel Baptist Church Choir in Annandale, Virginia. She also wrote an autobiography, “An Incredible Journey”, which was published.
Her daughter, Christy Turner and sons Raymond and Bart survive Mrs. Steele.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, December 22, 2018 at 12:00 PM at Heritage Bible Church, 2005 Old Spartanburg Road, Greer, SC 29650 with burial to follow at Woodlawn Memorial Park. The family will receive friends on Saturday from 11:00 AM– 11:45 AM at Heritage Bible Church prior to the service.
Serving as pallbearers are Tom Turner, Al Sumabat, Barry Formanack, Ken Vollnogle, Mark McCully, and Bobby Davis.
