Lorine Geneva Schaeffer was born in a small farming community in Oregon Missouri not far from the famous home town of Jesse James. Thankfully their lives took different paths. Her parents came from Germany and met in the middle of Kansas and were married shortly after meeting. They gave their four children a Godly heritage. Two of her brothers, Clinton and Lawrence are now in heaven, and her sister Lucille will be 100 this coming December 25. They attended the Methodist church and she accepted Christ as her Savior while there. Growing in God’s Word would take many years because the Bible was not really taught.
Lorine went to the first 8 grades in a one room school house and got there by going over a small river and through the woods. She loved school and could play about any song on the piano by ear. As of the beginning of January this year, she was still playing the piano at Southern Oaks Assisted Living. My mom had the gift of teaching and went to Maryville State Teachers College for 2 years and then taught elementary school of a couple years. She then moved to Texas to marry her high school sweetheart. I was born in that first year and then we moved to Kansas City Missouri where my mom lived until she retired to Greenville in 1980. It was in those early years in K.C. that the Lord brought 2 Godly women into her life who were very involved in Child Evangelism. She brought me to the CE clubs each week and we learned more and more about the Bible. She took their teacher training class and taught classes all over the area and then became a teacher trainer herself. Imparting God’s truth of Salvation was one of her main goals in life. It was in one of the CE classes that I accepted the Lord. One of those dear ladies told my mother that if she did not make me mind I would end of being a juvenile delinquent. Needless to say, she took that to heart.
On the outside our family appeared pretty normal, but that was fairly far from the truth. Even though my Dad had gone forward at a church revival, it was hard for our family to tell by the way he lived if he had put his faith in Christ. My sister Shyre, who was 6 years younger than I, was killed in a sledding accident at age 10, and two years later my mother found herself in the role of a displaced homemaker. She never forsook her God even though the circumstances of her life were most sad. She never wavered in her faith in God and that had such a profound affect on me. God gave her a job at Ford Motor Company and she was the only secretary there who did not know short hand!! Mean while I came to Bob Jones University far away from home. I know my mom missed me terribly, but she would have never said come home. So I stayed, met Dave, and we got married 4 years later after I finished nursing school. She remained in KC, but received early retirement in 1980 and so it was off to Greenville to be near us and her 2 grandsons, Darrin and Derrick.
She immediately became involved with Morningside Baptist Church and poured her life into those around her. She had a servant’s heart and gave of herself to care and be concerned for others. She wanted others to know her Savior. She was able to see her grandchildren graduate from college, graduate school, and Darrin from Seminary. She was at their wedding, has two wonderful grand daughter in laws, saw 5 great-grandchildren come into this world (one being born Riley Schaeffer Christ on her birthday), and four of whom have accepted Christ. She has seen her grandsons be the spiritual leaders in their homes. She has also seen sorrow. Darrin was to preach her funeral, but the Lord took him to heaven in October 2011. I am sure they will both enjoy seeing her funeral today and they know for a fact that Jesus is the Way, the Truth and the Life, and that will be for all eternity. My mother was a priceless gift to me and to my family and I honor her this day. I want my grandchildren to tell the next generation the truth of God’s Word...
