Praying for Lyles entire family....for a peace that passes understanding in this difficult time.  Although I did not know Lyles, I can see through his photos a magnetic, sincere, lovable nature that will surely be missed.  Praying for comfort for my friend Carol and all of Lyles family....that joyful memories of Lyles fill your hearts and heads as you move forward in the days ahead.

I was privileged to know Lyles. He was a much loved member of our church and our care group.  We will miss him.

Lyles Houston died much too young. He was in the Carolinas in his beloved mountains. Most of you remember Lyles and his great story telling, laughter and love of life. He was sure a giant of a man and a prince among them, he would give you the shirt off his back and wouldn't let you leave a visit to TEXAS without a hat from Paris Hatters or a good pair of boots, a fine chili pot/spoon or a wok for your kitchen. He never met a stranger, loved playing his dulcimer (or at least talking about playing it) and weaving a yarn or tale of days gone by around the dinner table or camp fire. He also was the master of the the Houston family chili recipe that we fed so many at the ranch and at chili feeds. I know you've all experienced that at one time or another. Lyles will be sorely missed and for those of you that got to spend time with him, he loved America and he believed in all of us as he regularly told us with a gleam in his eye and choking back a tear "You are a great American old friend!" He believed in us and our capability for positive good for this country. He was a friend to all receptive to true friendship from all walks of life. You will find that There are takers in this life and there are givers...Lyles Houston was a giver to the end. To that end may we each try to give a little more kindness to the family and friends we love and the people we meet on our journey. Mend fences. Take each day in full. I will miss my uncle Lyles terribly but I do not grieve for he is in heaven...telling a tale, sharing a laugh and serving up chili.

Lyles was so helpful to those that were new to the Hospitality Committee. He and Smitty were always there for anyone at anytime! He will always be appreciated and forever missed.

Lyles and I were friends for 55 years. As young Texans, we lived across the street from each other in San Antonio.  We kept in touch for all of these years and picked up our friendship where we left off.  We last emailed a few weeks ago re Carol's and my wife's similar medical issues.  My love to his family.  I loved him very much.

My heart is broken.  Lyles was one of those "characters" that you are lucky enough to have pass through your life.  His booming laugh was only outmatched by the size of his heart. Lyles and I met a number of years ago at Mud Creek Baptist Church. I was struck by his huge smile and warm spirit. To this day I still treasure, and wear,  the "Everybody is Somebody in Luckenbach Texas" t-shirt he brought me one Sunday. While only for a short time I am so thankful our paths crossed. My prayer go out to the entire family, I know you will miss him greatly.

We only got to meet Lyles  and have the blessing of knowing his zest for life and love for family in the last year. His wit and humor was contagious and made you want to know more about him and his roots. He was a gentleman and and a lovely host to us on several occasions. Only got to know Lyles briefly through the BSF Life of Moses Study in Boiling Springs, SC, but in that brief time he got to be close not just to me but to many of the men in our group and in the class in general.  Have already heard from some of his group-mates that they will miss him, as will I.  We lose another good, faithful man and friend, to a better place.  As we say in  Hispanic Texas tradition: "Vaya con Dios."
