Mark held a BA in Physics, Mathematics and Latin from Mankato State University, and a MS and PhD in Nuclear Physics from the University of Kansas. He enjoyed teaching early in his career, developed a specialized X-ray system for NASA, and completed post-doctoral training in Medical Physics at MD Anderson. Mark was dedicated to helping people in his 20+ year profession as a medical physicist at the University of Minnesota and VA Hospital System, Creighton University Medical School, and the Greenville Hospital System. After early retirement from his position as Director of Medical Physics for the 7 hospitals in the Greenville Hospital System, he continued to consult in radiological physics for many clients.
Mark loved people, reading, cooking, and travel, and dedicated his life to caring for other people. He was very fond of family, friends, neighbors, colleagues, and others he met along the way, and went out of his way to help them. Mark considered both Wichita, KS and Waseca, MN to be his hometowns and cherished his lifelong friendships with classmates from Wasecas’s Sacred Heart Catholic School. His quick wit and loving nature will be deeply missed.
Mark was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 29 years, Lucia Beacham Bruels; parents Clem and Florence (Collins) Bruels, aunts, uncles, and other family members. Survivors include his children Christine Bruels, Nicholas Bruels, Thomas Staton (Theresa); sister-in-law Nina Revis; grandsons Matt West and Bryan Staton; 3 great-grandchildren; cousins Joanne Collins Powers, Bernard Collins, John Ward, and Sister Mary Ellen Ward; and many friends.
The family appreciates the kind and loving care given at the Cascades of Greenville and Interim Hospice, and the Waters of Edina and Grace Hospice.
