Mary was born on December 13, 1926 in Columbus, Ohio, to Noah Joseph Beck and Bertha Florence Hildenbrand Beck. Mary was preceded in death by her older siblings Dorothy, Harry, and June, and her younger sister Marjorie. Mary and her siblings grew up in the Great Depression years. She learned well the virtue of frugality and practiced it throughout her life.
In 1953, she and Marvin S Hawkey were married. She adopted Marvin's two sons, Bill (now deceased) and Dan, as her own. She and Marvin had two sons together, Jeffrey Allen Hawkey, and Randy Joe Hawkey (deceased). The family made their home in Greenville, Ohio. In 1968, the family moved to Clearwater, Florida.
Mary loved to tell stories from her early life. She worked in a couple of law offices and at one time worked for a judge. Later, she worked in the sales office for a home builder. When her children reached high school age, Mary studied real estate and became a licensed real estate agent.
Mary loved cardinals and she enjoyed watching Shirley Temple movies. For many years, a large portrait of Shirley Temple hung on the wall in her bedroom. She enjoyed being pampered and getting her nails done. She was also quite the social butterfly, instantly becoming the life of any party or gathering.
In 2013, Mary moved to East Flat Rock to be near her son Jeff. She lived independently, as was her strong desire, until the age of 96. Since then, she has resided in Hendersonville with Jeff and his wife Teri.
Mary is survived by her son Jeff and daughter-in-law Teri, her adopted son Dan of Aiken, SC, six grandchildren, and sixteen great-grandchildren.
She will be laid to rest at Woodlawn Memorial Park, Greenville, SC.
