Mary Frances Nicoll
June 25, 1922 – June 10, 2014
Mary Frances Nicoll, 92, of Greenville, died June 10. She was the daughter of the late Ernest Eugene Nicoll and Cora Bramlett Nicoll. A graduate of Furman University in the class of 1943, she later earned a Master of Religious Education degree from Southern Baptist Seminary and a Master of Arts degree from Furman. She was a teacher and counselor at Anderson College from 1949 to 1953. She served as a Baptist Student Union Director in North Carolina from 1953 to 1961, first at UNC-Greensboro, then at the North Carolina Baptist Hospital in Winston-Salem. She is remembered as a Residence Hall Counselor on the Furman campus, where she was employed from 1961 to 1977. She retired from the Greenville County School System after ten years as a media specialist at Berea Elementary School. She was an active member of First Baptist Church, where she taught children and adults in Sunday School, served as a deacon, worked in the Media Center and took an active part in Women in Mission. She was a member of the American Association of University Women, and of the Greenville Woman's Club, and a volunteer at the Senior Action Center. She is survived by three nephews, John C. Nicoll of Lumberton, N.C. the Rev. Thomas Nicoll of Greenville, and Daniel C. Nicoll of Bethesda, Maryland, four great-nieces and six great-nephews,and seven great-great nephews and nieces. She was predeceased by her brothers John Charles Nicoll, and Ernest Eugene Nicoll, Jr, by a sister, Elizabeth Nicoll, by a nephew Joseph E. Nicoll and by two nieces, Jane Nicoll McGiboney and Judy Nicoll Turner. Her family is profoundly grateful for the loyal and loving care given to her by Kay Carter and Judy Pitt during the last years of her life. Frances was unfailingly gentle, kind and generous, and was deeply loved by her family and many friends. Funeral services will be held Monday, June 16, 11 AM, at the Chapel of Woodlawn Funeral Home, with visitation beginning at 10 AM. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to First Baptist Church, 847 Cleveland St, Greenville SC 29601 or to a charity of one's choice.
