Mike was born in Greenville, SC, to the late Bonnie and Jimmy Simmons. He attended Greenville County Schools and graduated in 1969 from Wade Hampton High School, where he proudly played varsity football, and he was an alumnus of Georgia Southern University.
Throughout his life, Mike had a deep love for sports and the outdoors. As an adult, he especially enjoyed playing tennis and basketball, and he always enjoyed trips to the beach and the lake. Music was one of his greatest passions—he loved playing the guitar and wrote many songs over the years.
One of his most meaningful songs reflected his faith and the way he lived his life, titled Epitaph and its words read: When I'm called up, up to glory, All I want to leave behind, is a pathway leading to my Savior, one that is easy to find. Lord help me make it straight and narrow. Then I'll run my race and be headed home to win the prize.
Mike’s race on earth is now complete, and he is home, resting in the loving arms of Jesus.
He is survived by his devoted wife, Gail; his two children, Michelle and Michael (Misty); three step-grandchildren, Zach, Pierce, and Preston; one granddaughter, Cora; and his brother, Don Simmons (Essie).
Mike was preceded in death by his parents, Bonnie and Jimmy Simmons.
A visitation for Mike will be held on Thursday, December 18, 2025 from 3:00 pm-5:00 pm at Mackey Funerals and Cremations at Woodlawn, 1 Pine Knoll Dr., Greenville, SC 29609.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Mitchell Road Christian Academy.
