

Mildred Bailey Mullikin, age 96, passed away June 10, 2025. Ms. Mullikin was born June 26, 1928, in Spartanburg, SC to the late Rev. Doctor William Louie Mullikin and Francis Elizabeth Bailey Mullikin. She was preceded in death by her siblings Margaret Mullikin Whitmire, William Louie Mullikin, Jr., Janet Bailey Mullikin, who died as an infant, and her niece Andrea Mullikin Hager.
Ms. Mullikin graduated from Spartanburg High School in 1945, Lander University, B.A. 1949, and the University of Alabama, M.A. 1952. Her first career position was at Blue Mountain College, Blue Mountain, Mississippi, where she was the Speech and Drama Instructor from 1950 until 1960. Ms. Mullikin then accepted a position as an original faculty member at Broward College-Central Campus in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, (then known as the Junior College of Broward County) where she served as head of the Speech and Theatre Program until her retirement in 1990. During her career in theatre Ms. Mullikin was a member of the planning committee for the construction of both the Fine Arts Theatre of Broward Community College-Central Campus and Bailey Hall of Broward Community College-Central Campus. She was passionate throughout her career in the development and encouragement of her college theatre students as well as the children of Broward County as she spent eleven years working with the Broward County children’s theatre program.
Ms. Mullikin received the Lifetime Service Award for Excellence from the American Association of University Professors. In 1985 she was nominated for the Broward Silver Knight Award sponsored by The Miami Herald and in 1987 was nominated for the Moretti Award.
After retirement and being away for fifty-three years, Ms. Mullikin returned to South Carolina and made her new home in the Rolling Green Retirement Village in Greenville. She served as president of the Creekside Association of Rolling Green Village and was an active member of the residents choral group.
Ms. Mullikin is survived by her nieces and nephews: Ashlyn Mullikin Miner of Palm Beach Gardens, FL, William Louie Mullikin III (Amy) of Spartanburg, SC, Milton James Whitmire, Jr. (Linda) of Waynesville, NC, J. Michael Whitmire (Becky) of Gainesville, GA, and twenty-four great nieces and nephews.
