

Monnie was born in Spartanburg, SC on August 15, 1941 to parents Emmett M. and Ada White Broome. He was a graduate of Spartanburg High School (1959) where he served as president of his class. Monnie helped plan class reunions for 60 years where he enjoyed close relationships with many of his classmates. He met the “love of his life,” Jackie Gravely while attending the University of SC on athletic scholarship. He transferred to Wofford College where he participated in football as a scholarship athlete. He graduated in 1964 and continued to be a strong supporter of Wofford throughout his life.
He joined JP Stevens & Company (Greenville SC) and spent his entire career in the textile industry. In 2014 he retired as Executive Vice President of Human Resources from JPS Industries.
During his career, Monnie was President & Board Member of the Carolina Society for Training & Development, two-time Chairman of the HR Division of SC Textile Manufacturers Association, Board Member of the SC Textile Manufacturers Association, Member of Society for Human Resources Management, Chairman of the Regional Educational Association Advisory Board for Greenville County, Chairman of North Greenville University Advisory Council, and member of the Poinsett Club.
During retirement, he enjoyed spending time at Litchfield Beach and Lake Keowee. When his children were young he was a devoted 3rd grade Sunday School teacher at Edwards Road Baptist Church.
Monnie was a strong yet humble person who will be remembered for the many lives he touched. He instilled the values of faith, family, and education in both his children and grandchildren. He always went the extra mile to help those around him. Monnie had a huge heart and always desired to do “the right thing.” His was a life well-lived and well-loved.
He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Jackie, daughter Leah Broome Tankersley, son Nathan Broome (Katie), grandchildren Charlie Tankersley (Avery), Anna Tankersley, Jack Tankersley, Emmett Broome and Savannah Broome, brother Gerald D. Broome along with beloved cousins, nieces, and nephews.

A Celebration of Life for Monnie will be held Monday, January 8, 2024 at 2:00 PM at Mackey Funerals and Cremations, 311 Century Drive, Greenville, SC 29607, followed by a visitation from 3:00 PM to 5:00 PM.
