South Carolina.
Born on February 2, 1929, Myrtle was the eldest daughter in her family and spent her early life on her family’s farm in Mill Spring, North Carolina, alongside her parents and nine siblings. After meeting her husband, Randall, and settling in Greenville, she embraced both work and motherhood, ensuring her family was always cared for. She found joy in tending to her flowers and garden, reading books, cooking for her family, and sewing, often making quilts and clothing for her children. Myrtle’s faith was a guiding light throughout her life, and she was a longtime member of Piedmont Park Baptist Church.
She is survived by her three children, Elaine Shirley and her husband, Ronnie, of Greenville; Bryan Smith of Greenville; and Annette Niederpruem and her husband, Donald, of Tampa, Florida. She also leaves behind grandson Greg Quinn, his wife, Anita, and their daughter, Maria, all of Greenville, as well as granddaughter Carrie Niederpruem and her husband, Christopher Beyers, of Tampa. Her surviving brother, Glenn Phillips of Forest City, North Carolina, also mourns her passing.
She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Randall Ledbetter Smith; her parents, Luther Phillips and Pearl Adair Phillips; her six brothers, Clyde, Ernest, Henry, Everette, Bob, and Lewis Phillips; and her two sisters, Ethel P. Trotter and Kathleen P. Tucker.
Myrtle’s family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to the staff at Cascades Verdae assisted living community for their compassionate care and support.
A visitation will be held on Tuesday, February 18, at 9:30 AM, followed by a funeral service at 10:00 AM. Myrtle will be deeply missed but fondly remembered by all who knew and loved her.
