
He was a 1958 graduate of Greenville Senior High School and a 1962 graduate of Clemson University with an Electrical Engineering Degree. He did further graduate work at NYU. Oscar served in the US Air Force as a Lieutenant. He worked for the Eastern Ground Electronics Installation Agency and then spent 40 years as an electrical engineer with Simmons Machinery Company. He taught adult education with Greenville County Schools from 1968 to 1972. After he retired he went back to work for Greenville County Schools as a journalism teacher at Greenville Middle Academy.
He was an active member at First Baptist Greenville serving on the deacon board, usher, and teaching Sunday school. He also served on the Kindergarten, Stewardship, and Property Committees. He also was an AYMC volunteer. He was a former president of the Council for the Prevention of Teen Pregnancy and the Vice President of TVVA in Brevard, NC. Oscar was also a member of the Poinsett Club.
He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Sandra S. Funderburk; 2 sons, Oscar “Jaby” F. Funderburk, III and Jon M. Funderburk (Beatriz); a daughter, Susan “Suzy” Harrison (Chuck); a grandson, Charlie Harrison; and an honorary grandchild, Channel Bowens.
A memorial service to celebrate Oscar’s life will be held at 2pm on Tuesday, July 26, 2016 at First Baptist Greenville. The family will receive friends immediately following the service in the church narthex.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Music Ministry at First Baptist Greenville, or to the Institute for Transitional Oncology Research (ITOR), 300 E. McBee Ave. Ste. 200 Greenville, SC 29601.
The family greatly appreciates the compassion and care of the staff of ITOR as well as Dr. Mark O’Rourke and Dr. Elizabeth Cull, and the staff of 5D at GHS.
