Pat was born on Saturday, June 2, 1934, in Conneautville, Pennsylvania, to William Miles and Katherine Agnes Hites. She earned her BS in Elementary Education in 1965 from Villa Maria College. While attending college and singing in the choir at Lawrence Park Methodist Church, she met her future husband, Frederick Irvine Chapman. They married on June 5, 1965, and shared 55 adventurous years. In 1987, they relocated from Erie, Pennsylvania, to Greenville, South Carolina, when Fred entered semi-retirement.
Pat was a vibrant and joyful presence, always ready to encourage those around her. Prior to marriage, a teaching position took her to Virginia, where she developed friendships with individuals who attended a local church. Through their influence, she began attending the same church and was exposed to clear biblical teaching. She learned about Christ’s love demonstrated through His sacrificial death on the cross to pay the penalty for the sins of humanity. This truth became personal as she recognized her sinfulness and understood that Christ’s atonement was not just for humanity at large but specifically for her. In response, she placed her trust in Jesus, acknowledging her need for forgiveness, believing that His death cleanses from sin, and trusting in His resurrection as the decisive victory over sin and death. This act of faith marked a spiritual transformation, granting her a new identity in Christ and dramatically altering the direction of her life. She devoted her life to her faith, proclaiming Jesus as Lord and sharing His message with others. She devoted her life to her faith, proclaiming Jesus as Lord and sharing His message with others.
A substitute teacher for several years, Pat was deeply involved in Stonecroft Ministries, serving as a Christian Women’s Club coordinator. She led numerous Bible studies and women’s groups over her 37 years as a member of Morningside Baptist Church. Alongside Fred, she hosted many gatherings that brought joy and laughter to friends and family alike. Pat’s adventurous spirit led her to travel to Hawaii, Cyprus, and Israel. She swam laps regularly, logging over 52 miles annually, and lived her life with energy and purpose, seeking to glorify God in all she did. Pat enjoyed puzzles, cooking, and cherishing moments with her family.
She is survived by her daughters and their families: Sherrie, children, Michael (and great-grandson Anthony), Leighanna, and Brenden, Katherine, husband Clay, and their children Benjamin, Abigail, Rachel (husband Seth and great-grandson Arlo), Caroline, Hannah, Madeleine, and Emira, Lucia, husband Rick, and their children Tristen (husband Nathan), Haydn, and Ansa, Christina, husband John, and their children John and Joel.
