Dr. Peter Allan Steveson, 90, passed away, peacefully in his sleep, and entered the presence of the Savior he loved and served, on July 10, 2025 in Greenville, SC. Pete was born to Steve & Evelyn Rose Steveson in Honolulu, Hawaii on July 11, 1934. He lived in several different States as a child while his father served in the Navy. After World War II, the family settled in San Diego, CA where he met his wife, Sue, who he married on September 7,1956. Two months after they were married, Pete and Sue rededicated their lives to the Lord at a camp retreat in Palomar, California, and never looked back. Pete started teaching a Sunday School class, and attended Bible classes while working for Convair Aeronautics. While on a business trip to Florida, while reading his Bible, the Lord spoke to him about preparing for a full-time Christian ministry.
In 1959, they moved to Greenville, S.C., where they both started working at Bob Jones University. In 1960, their daughter, Rebecca, was born and shortly after, Pete was honorably discharged from the Naval Reserves. Pete and Sue returned to San Diego in 1966 where he became the principal of Christian High School. He also started a radio ministry called Viewpoint on the Home and Family which aired for many years, including on WMUU, in Greenville, SC.
In 1973, he served a year in Georgia as principal of Macon Christian Academy before returning to Bob Jones in 1974. He worked as the Assistant Principal of Bob Jones Academy for several years under Dr. George Youstra. Dr. Steveson received his PhD in Bible and moved to the University, where he taught over twenty various Bible classes until his retirement in 2003. During his time at Bob Jones University, he also worked for the BJU Press where he published seven commentaries and books on the Bible. His book on evangelism, Christ’s Last Command, was also translated into Korean.
Pete was an avid reader. He loved to laugh, study, travel, and nap. Above all, however, he was a steadfast and faithful lover of God’s Word. When walking on the campus, he would often be seen carrying a large stack of 3x5 cards covered front and back with scripture that he was either memorizing or reviewing. He committed to memory most of the New Testament and large portions of the Old Testament.
After retirement, Pete and Sue (and sometimes Rebecca) traveled to sixty countries by land and sea. He continued to read his favorite book, the Bible, from cover to cover – something he had done for the first time in October 1958, and the last time on October 12, 2024. Some of those years, he read the Bible, completely through, four times. He was a steadfast prayer warrior and faithfully prayed for his family, as well as many others, on a daily basis. Dr. Steveson was a much beloved husband and father, loyal friend and godly teacher/mentor. He will be greatly missed.
Services for Peter will be held on Thursday, July 17, 2025 at Hampton Park Baptist Church, 875 State Park Rd, Greenville, SC 29609. Visitation will be from 12:00 PM to 1:20 PM followed by the funeral at 1:30 PM. Burial will be at Woodlawn Memorial Park, 1 Pine Knoll Dr., Greenville, SC 29609.
In lieu of flowers the family requests that memorials may be made to Bob Jones University School of Religion Scholarships, 1700 Wade Hampton Blvd, Greenville SC 29614 or to Hampton Park Baptist Church, 875 State Park Rd, Greenville SC 29609.
