

Born to Myrtle Marie and Robert Fred Lathan, he was predeceased by his beloved wife, Doris McKinney Lathan; his cherished son, Robert McKinney Lathan; and his siblings Orion Lathan, Bob Lathan, Ralph Lathan, and Cleo Lathan Boller. Also, by Debbie's son Scotty Smith
A proud graduate of the University of South Carolina, he earned his undergraduate degree in 1963—the same year he married Doris—and shortly thereafter served in the United States Air Force, rising to the rank of Captain before completing his service in 1967. He went on to graduate magna cum laude from the USC School of Law in May 1970, the same year his son Robert was born.
Professionally, he practiced law in Greenville County, where he served as Secretary of the Greenville County Bar Association in 1971. From 1982 to 1984, he was honored to serve on the South Carolina Commission on Higher Education, appointed by Governor Carroll Campbell.
A man of strong faith, he was a longtime member of Taylors First Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon and taught a Young Married Couples Sunday School class for eight years.
He was also an avid golfer and longtime member of Thornblade Club, having played hundreds of golf courses throughout his life.
He is survived by his devoted spouse, Debbie Dickson and her sons Brent Smith (Trace) and Bradley Smith (Kayla); his daughters, Jennifer Lathan King (Rich) and Julianne Lathan; and his beloved grandsons, Rich King III and Griffin King.
He leaves behind a legacy of love, service, and integrity that will be cherished by all who knew him.
Services for Ray will be held on Tuesday, September 2, 2025 at Mackey Funerals and Cremations at Woodlawn, 1 Pine Knoll Dr. Greenville, SC 29609. Visitation will begin at 6:00 PM followed by a Memorial Service in the funeral home chapel at 7:30 PM.
