Dr. Richard Lanning Greene, age 72, of Greenville, South Carolina, passed away September 27, 2021. He was the beloved husband of Lonna Rae Greene (nee Kleinsasser) of Huron, SD, to whom he was married for 48 years. As their wedding anniversary was the day before his birthday, he would tell everyone that his beautiful wife was the best gift he ever received. He embraced his role as a loving father to his three children: Tina Bishop (husband Joshua) of Fountain Inn, SC, Nathaniel Greene (wife Harmony) of Tega Cay, SC, and Brandon Greene (wife Jennifer) of Colorado Springs, CO. His pride and joy were his six cherished grandchildren - Eleanor, Owen, Ayla, Lincoln, Charleigh, and Watson - with whom he loved to have “story time.” He was the son of William and Mattie Greene (deceased) and is survived by his three siblings David Greene (wife Audrey), Kathy Greene, and Joel Greene. He is also survived by numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.
Richard will always be remembered for his faith, sharp mind, sense of humor, selflessness, baking delicious cookies, and his propensity to give those he loved unique nicknames. He earned his Masters in Religious Education from Liberty University in 1986, a PhD in Philosophy from Columbia Pacific University in 1990, and a PhD in Christian Education from Kingsbury Theological Seminary in 1991. He served as a Licensed Clinical Therapist in various settings throughout his career. His family is comforted by his enduring faith and his strong belief in God's provision and timing in all things, even death. He often quoted Isaiah 60:22, “When the time is right, I, the Lord, will make it happen.”
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in memory of Richard Greene to James Valley Christian School (1550 Dakota Avenue North Huron, SD 57350) to help continue the growth and development of young people and support faith-based education. Out of respect for his wishes, no funeral services will be held as it was Richard’s wish that his estate be used for others, rather than himself.
Fond memories and expressions of sympathy for the family may be shared at www.woodlawn-fh.com for the Greene family.
