Born in Greenville, SC, he was the only child of the late Leland Custis Montgomery, Jr., and Ida Edith Montgomery. He was raised in Greenville and graduated from Wade Hampton High School before attending Clemson University.
He was a member of First Baptist Church of Orlando, FL and a former member of Prestonwood Baptist Church of Dallas, TX, Trinity Baptist Church of San Antonio, TX, and First Baptist Church of Greenville, SC.
Richard served in the United States Army and the Army Reserves before embarking on a successful career in the construction industry developing resorts for several organizations including the Marriott Corporation and the Walt Disney Company. As an Imagineer for Walt Disney, Richard was on the opening team for the Euro Disney theme park and resorts (now Disneyland Paris). He also had the opportunity to lead the renovation of The Pentagon for the U.S. Department of Defense in Washington, D.C.
In his free time Richard enjoyed tinkering with and driving his collection of classic cars and motorcycles, listening to Motown music, reading military history books, engaging in home renovation projects, and spending time with family. His devotion to his wife and children was evident as he provided for their every need; he loved to spoil them. Outside of his family, Richard was known to help anyone in need of support when going through tough times. He leaves behind a legacy of hard work and generosity to others.
Richard is predeceased by his beloved wife of 56 years, Nancy Smith Montgomery, and is survived by his son Richard Wayne “Mac” Montgomery, Jr. of Orlando, FL, daughter Meredith Elaine Montgomery of Centreville, VA, son Ryan James Montgomery of Atlanta, GA, and grandsons Richard Wayne “Tripp” Montgomery III and Colin James Montgomery of Orlando, FL.
Services will be conducted in the Remembrance Chapel at Woodlawn Memorial Park on Friday, March 15th at 1:00pm.
