Richard Sawyer

Born on July 23, 1944 in Portsmouth, Virginia, he was the son of the late Ruth and Grady Childress.

Richard served his country as a Marine on three tours in Vietnam from February 12, 1965 to August 20, 1969. During this time he was a Hawk Missile Operator (1st LAAM Bm USMC). After his honorable discharge, he worked at Greenville Technical College as the print shop manager and Graphic Communication teacher until his retirement.

He was also a proud member of several historic boards that worked in preserving the history of Greenville County through archeology and photography. Richard faithfully attended Reedy River Baptist Church, where he did not miss a Sunday for nearly 30 years

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his brother Barry and sister Frances.

Richard is survived by his son David (Tina), granddaughter Téa, three half- brothers Chuck, Ronnie, and Benny, as well as a half-sister, Pam.

A Memorial Service for Richard will be held on Thursday, May 21, 2026 at 1:00 PM at Reedy River Baptist Church, 871 N Hwy 25 Bypass, Greenville, SC 29617. Comital will follow at Greenville Memorial Gardens, 7784 Augusta Rd, Piedmont, SC 29673.
