Richard "Dick" Neil Tapp

Born in Memphis, Tennessee on December 28, 1943 to Charles Hall Tapp and Sarah Agnes Tapp, Dick graduated from St. John’s Military Academy in Delafield, Wisconsin, then earned a B.A. from Furman University and a J.D. from the University of South Carolina School of Law, where he graduated first in his class. For 45 years, he practiced law in Greenville, South Carolina, ultimately developing a specialized practice in financially complex family court cases. He was a fellow of the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers.

Dick proudly served in the United States Army as a platoon leader in Vietnam, where he was awarded the Bronze Star Medal.

He was an Elder at First Presbyterian Church of Greenville, where he served on numerous committees and led his beloved PrimeTime Sunday Life Group for nearly 15 years.

While he was foremost a servant of Christ, then a devoted husband, father and "GrandPapa", he loved the game of golf, as well as tennis, skiing, food and wine, and reading.

Dick is survived by his wife, Heather Hylton Tapp; two sons, Richard Elliott Tapp (Elaine) of Atlanta, Georgia, and Nelson Crawford Poe III (Shana) of Greenville, South Carolina; and seven beloved grandchildren: Richard Elliott Tapp Jr. (10), Laura Elizabeth Tapp (8), William Sutherland Tapp (6), and Henry Morgan Tapp (3); and Nelson “Crawford” Poe IV (11), Grayson Manning Poe (9), and Bennett Grace Poe (4). He is predeceased by his parents and brother, William Thomas Tapp.

The family wishes to express heartfelt thanks to VIA Health Partners for their palliative and hospice care, and to Freedom Home Care, especially Alexandria Terry, for their devoted support in his final days.

A memorial service will be held at First Presbyterian Church of Greenville on Wednesday, July 9 at 1pm, and visitation with the family immediately following in the Abbott-Sturgis Gathering Spaces.
