Rodgers Oscar Gaines, 82, husband of Jerry Norton Gaines, passed away Tuesday, March 3, 2015 at Hillcrest Memorial Hospital in Simpsonville.
Born in Greenwood, to the late Fred Oscar and Evelyn Marie Rodgers Gaines, Rodgers wasted no time crafting and honing his skills in the sport he loved so much, baseball.
He played American Legion Baseball as well as in the Textile League before playing in college. A graduate of Clemson College, he was a member of their 1954 ACC Championship baseball team. After college, Rodgers worked at Steel Heddle Manufacturing for twenty plus years until his retirement. He went on to open his own business, SYNEHI Castings Incorporated in 1984 and was the runner up for the South Carolina Small Businessman of the Year in 1998. He was a member of Northgate Baptist Church.
Surviving, in addition to his wife of sixty-one years, are his children, Stan Gaines (Shirley), Denise Taylor (Davis), Keith Gaines (Amy) and Ashli Gaines (Paige Phillips); a sister-in-law, Judy Scott (George); seven grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be 11:00 AM Saturday, March 7, 2015 in the sanctuary of Northgate Baptist Church, with Dr. Barry Jimmerson officiating.
Burial will follow in Woodlawn Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends from 10:00 until 11:00 AM, prior to the service at the church.
