Shirley was born April 12, 1935 in Anderson County, SC. She was the daughter of the late Alford Branson Fisher Sr. and Nellie Small Fisher Fisher Martin.
Shirley married John William Shamel at First Baptist Church in Abbeville, SC on June 13, 1959. They enjoyed 52 wonderful years of marriage until John’s passing on February 11, 2012.
Shirley grew up primarily in Abbeville and Abbeville County, SC. She was a graduate of Abbeville High School in a class of forty students and a graduate of the Greenwood College of Commerce. She retired from SC Department of Vocational Rehabilitation in Anderson, SC.
Shirley was a faithful Christion all her life. She and John were charter members of Abiding Savior Lutheran Church where over the years Shirley served as secretary of the women of the church and the congregation and was a member of the Lutheran Women’s Missionary League, Fellowship Board, and Outreach Board.
Shirley was artistic and witty. She was an accomplished seamstress all her life. She enjoyed writing poems and cards for her family and friends and giving them as gifts on special birthdays and occasions. She also enjoyed researching her Fisher and Parker Family genealogy.
In addition to her husband John, her parents, and her step-father William Pennal Martin, Shirley was preceded in death by her five beloved siblings: Carolyn Fisher Sharpton, “Bill” Alford Branson Fisher Jr., Thelma Fisher McCurry Culbertson, Peggy Fisher Campbell Rogers, and Annie Loys Fisher Taylor. Shirley was the last surviving member of her immediate family. In addition to her five siblings Shirley loved her large extended family who enjoyed many family gatherings and reunions for many decades. She is survived by two very special remaining first cousins: Sheila Seigler Dye and Steve Patterson. Shirley had dozens of adored nieces and nephews who adored her in return.
Shirley is also survived by her two daughters and sons-in-law, Deana and Tom Davenport (Newberry County) and Amanda and Tim Dutton (Piedmont, SC); four grandsons and a grand daughter-in-law; “Rett” Thomas Everett Davenport III (Norcross, GA), John Parker Davenport and wife Nina (Duluth, GA), Spencer Reed Davenport (Pittsburgh, PA), and Michael Hobbs Dutton (Piedmont, SC). She was blessed with her first great grandchild born this summer, Toni Elizabeth Davenport.
Shirley’s daughters wish to sincerely thank her many family members, very special church friends and neighbors, and loved ones who brought happiness and joy to Shirley in her later years.
