Susan Boyd Hoag, or as her grandchildren called her, “Moo,” passed away on December 5, 2023. She was born on September 15, 1946 to Ward Wallingford Boyd and Violet Davis Boyd. Susan’s pride and joy were her children and grandchildren. She is survived by her sons John Wellington Hoag IV and wife Reid, and Jason Wallingford Hoag; grandchildren Wells Hoag, Bishop Hoag, Ellie Hoag, and Davis Hoag; sister-in-law Martha D. Boyd; nephew Charles Eugene Boyd ll; and niece Suzanne Boyd Matheny. She was preceded in death by her parents and her brother Charles Eugene Boyd.
Susan was a graduate of Georgetown College in Kentucky with a bachelor’s degree in English/Speech. She was an avid University of Kentucky Wildcat fan!
Susan was a longtime member of Buncombe Street Church.
Susan’s career was in the banking industry where she retired after 34 years as an Executive Vice President. She then followed her passion for politics and held the position of Community Development/Legislative Liaison for Greenville Technical College.
Susan received many awards over her career including The Order of the Palmetto, the State of South Carolina’s highest honor; Speaker of the House Leadership Award; The Order of the Jessimine; Distinguished Leadership Award from the National Association of Community Leadership; Leadership Greenville Platinum Award; the SouthTrust Bank Corporation Award of Excellence; and the Athena Leadership Award from the Greenville Chamber of Commerce.
Susan’s community involvement included: Founding Member of the Polo Classic; Board of Directors for Freedom Weekend Aloft, Past President; Board of Directors, Greenville Tech Foundation, Inc.; Buncombe Street Methodist Church Finance Committee; Board of Directors, Greenville Area Development Council; and Legislative Audit Council
Susan also served as Board Member, Executive Committee and Chair of Legislative Committee for the Greenville Chamber of Commerce; Board of Directors, Greenville Transit Authority; Oversight Committee, State of South Carolina 1996 to 2004; Chair, South Carolina Commission on Women; Vice Chair, PASS Commission; Board of Directors, Greenville’s Child; Cabinet Member, United Way; Past Chair, Meals on Wheels; Board of Directors, Greenville Symphony; Treasurer, Greenville Professional Women’s Forum; President, Leadership Greenville Forum; Graduate, Leadership Greenville; Graduate, Leadership South Carolina; Board of Directors, Fall for Greenville; Board of Directors, Red Cross; President, Downtown Business Association; Treasurer, Generations Group Homes, Inc.; Steering Committee, Greenville County School District.
Services will be held on Thursday, December 14, 2023 at Buncombe Street, 200 Buncombe Street, Greenville, SC with Visitation from 12:30 pm-1:45 pm followed by the service at 2:00 pm. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to Gateway House or Buncombe Street Children’s Foundation.
