

He joined his wife of 61 years, Darlene, his daughter; “Gina”, and his sister Virginia Crouch.
Mr. Smith was a Chief Petty Officer who served in the United States Navy during WW II. During his time in the service, while a Chief Radio Operator, he received the Purple Heart due to combat wounds he received when he was 1 of 94 survivors of the USN Destroyer USS Buck which was torpedoed by a German U Boat off the coast of Italy.
Mr. Smith retired from Gulf Oil after 33 years as a Retail Marketer. He then worked with Belk for 13 years.
He was a member of the 9th Inning Sunday School Class at Overbrook Baptist Church whose members will be serving as Honorary Pallbearers.
Survivors include a son; Thomas W. Smith, Jr. (Alice), 4 daughters; Peggy Burton, Debi Dalton (Jessie Redondo), Tina Marie Smith, and Dottie LaMance (Robert). He is also survived by 8 grandchildren; George Burton, III, Bethany Tharin, John Burton, David, John, and Ryan Dalton, Logan and Mason LaMance as well as 8 great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends on Wednesday, March 23, 2016 at Woodlawn Funeral Home, 1 Pine Knoll Drive, Greenville, SC from 12:00 – 1:45 where funeral services will be held at 2:00 pm. Interment will follow at Woodlawn Memorial Park.
In lieu of flowers the family requests memorials be made to Meals on Wheels of Greenville, 15 Oregon Street, Greenville, SC 29605.
