Born on November 15, 1956, in the Holy City of Charleston, South Carolina, Tim was the son of Jack and Margaret Hopkins and was raised in Greenville, South Carolina. He was a lifelong lover of history, with a passion for traveling to historical sites and sharing his knowledge with anyone willing to listen. He generously shared this passion by helping his sister tutor her students, prompting one student to remark, “Your brother knows everything — is he a history professor?”
Tim graduated from Southside High School in 1975, where he proudly served as Senior Class President. During his high school years, he played guitar in a band and developed a lifelong love of music. He later earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration from the University of South Carolina Upstate. He built a successful career as a Purchasing Agent, beginning at Greenville Memorial Hospital and concluding his professional journey at Hartness International.
Tim was baptized and confirmed at Saint James Episcopal Church, where he faithfully served as an acolyte and enjoyed the EYC. During his time in hospice, Tim met the Reverend Lynn Sanders, Acting Rector of Saint James, and requested to rejoin his church community — a reflection of his enduring faith. His deep faith is also reflected in the music he selected for his funeral, including “Will the Circle Be Unbroken” by The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band and “I’ll Fly Away” by Allison Krauss, which he believed expressed his enduring faith and hope.
Tim is survived by his beloved son and daughter-in-law, Will and Julia Hopkins of Greenville; his sisters, Meg Carroll of Georgia and Mary Anna Elsey of Greer as well as a maternal uncle and aunt, Fred and Angela McClure.
Tim will forever be remembered for his optimistic personality, humor, and being a truly good friend. His life touched many, and he will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.
A service celebrating Tim’s life will be held at Saint James Episcopal Church, 301 Piney Mountain Road, Greenville, South Carolina 29609, on Saturday, March 21, 2026, at 1:00 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, Tim would have loved for memorial donations to be made to Camp Spearhead, where he spent many happy summers working as a counselor. Donations may be mailed to: 4806 Old Spartanburg Road, Taylors, SC 29687 or by using the Donation link: https://secure.givelively.org/donate/greater-greenville-parks-foundation/camp-spearhead
