William F. Crawford (Bill) of Greenville, S.C., born in Blytheville, Arkansas, passed away peacefully at his daughter's home after a long and exciting life which included living and working through the depression of 1929; surviving the attack at PEARL HARBOR while serving in the Army; and living in Alaska, before finally establishing his roots in Greenville, South Carolina, where he raised his family and established lifelong relationships.

He was the son of Henry and Nellie Crawford. He is survived by two children, Patrick H Crawford and Pamela (& Steve) Dell and a daughter-in-law Cindy Darnell Crawford. Bill's son, Bilbo, predeceased him in 2010; daughter-in-law Ansley Crawford in 1996; and Bill's wife of 55 years, Margaret Bowers Crawford, in 2007. He has seven grandchildren: Ri; Belle (Chris); Bonnie; Steve (J'aime); Lauren (Babak); Brent (Stephanie) and Kelley. He has also been blessed with 10 great-grandchildren.

Bill and Margaret met in Greenville standing at a juke box at her brother's little grill-restaurant; they married and soon started attending White Oak Baptist Church, where they felt like part of a huge family. The couple managed the AMVETS CLUB on E. Court Street for about 40 years.

Bill's greatest joy was to teach children and adults to water ski, while Margaret drove the boat. In the winter, they would go snow skiing in North Carolina every week, and after the snow "dried up" in our area, they jumped in their motorhome to travel to ski slopes all over the US, visiting family, friends and grandkids along the way. Bill was 91 years old when he last snow skied at Sugar Mountain, NC.

This quiet man possessed a calm accepting spirit, which invited everyone he met to feel comfortable, respected and loved. He believed one way to transcend life was by going through it fully, not ever avoiding it, but just experiencing everything it had to offer to its fullest, seeking to learn as much as possible about others and himself from every encounter. His calmness, his simplicity, his acceptance, his stories, his devotion to family and country, and his most precious gift of non-judgmental love, will be greatly missed by all who were touched by his footprints as he journeyed through life.

September 2, 2018, ...... The grave site service for Bill was exceptionally organized by the funeral director, the cemetery coordinator, the grounds keeper, and all the staff at Woodlawn Funeral Home and Memorial Park. A special thanks to Kevin, Keith and Mike for their great support and effort in coordinating all the aspects of this memorial service. The immediate family lived in Florida, Lousiana, Texas, California, North Carolina, Baltimore and Columbia, SC, and it was no small task arranging such a beautiful service when a family covers every corner of the US. Thanks again to everyone, especially Jimmy Cooke, who presided over the service. All of you made this memorial service a day to remember.

Dearest Pamela and family,

It's been hard to find just the right words to express my thoughts on this very special man I knew for a brief moment. I was his caregiver for the last weeks of his life, an honor I will hold close to my heart forever.
Upon meeting Bill for the first time, I could tell instantly that he was an exceptional human being. He immediately welcomed me into his life, to keep him company, cook up some cornbread and help him with the simple things we take for granted. A shower and shave were the highlight of his day! To bring a smile to his face gave my heart a lot of good. Behind those sparkling blue eyes and hilarious sense of humor was a man's man....who lived a full life and was happy to share his stories.
For a brief moment, Mr Bill Crawford left a huge impact on me....which just goes to show what a very special man he was.
I will miss you very much!

Love always,

Pamela Dell

Thank you all for attending Daddy's service. Unconditional love of family and friends is hard describe, but we are blessed with it! You each created and added to an amazing warmth we felt wrapped around us . Woodlawn Memorial Park was wonderful to us, also.

I so enjoyed the Crawford's every Sunday and Wednesday nights at White Oak Baptist Church. Kindness and generosity were a constant. Blessings for you Pam and yours. What a wonderful life your Dad shared with so many.

Bill Crawford was a true Southern Gentleman, who always thought of others and when engaging in conversations, he took a genuine interest in the other person. I have fond memories of playing cards with Bill, and was lucky to be his spades partner on a few occasions, because he was a shrewd player and we usually won. But if we lost, he just laughed at how much fun we had. He was an eternal optimist.
