Born in Greenville, SC on December 10, 1937, Bill was the son of the late William Wirt Stover and Elizabeth Mills Stover. He graduated from Greenville High in 1954 at the age of 16. He graduated from Clemson University in 1958 with a degree in mechanical engineering. While at Clemson, Bill lettered in Swimming and won an ACC medal while competing. He fondly spoke of swimming 100 laps just for warm ups! Bill also ran cross country for Clemson University. Bill later earned a Masters in Engineering from Virginia Tech in 1961.
He married the 1st love of his life, Marta Tucker in 1961. Together they raised two daughters until Marty’s death in 1997. Bill later was blessed with the 2nd love of his life, Sue Smith. Bill and Sue were married in 2000 and shared many wonderful adventures and memories together.
Bill started Stover Mechanical in 1979 and ran it successfully until he sold the business as he headed into retirement. He was a member of the Piedmont Chapter of South Carolina Society of Professional Engineers and was voted South Carolina Engineer of the year in 2008. Bill was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Greenville, SC for over 40 years and served as an officer. The Thursday morning Men’s breakfast and Bible study was dear to his heart and he attended for years until his declining health prevented it.
Bill was known for his passion for all things Clemson. His grandchildren called him “Tiger” as the oldest grandchild quickly realized the association between Bill and the Clemson Tiger paw. Some of his best memories were spent cheering on his beloved Tigers with friends and family. He absolutely adored the color orange and felt that everyone looked better in it! He often spoke of how Clemson equipped him to succeed in life and wanted others to have that same opportunity.
Bill was predeceased by his parents, his 1st wife and 2 infant sons, John Lee and Will. He is survived by his loving wife, Sue, his daughters, Molly LaHay (Charles) of Elm City, NC and Elizabeth Rogers (Bill) of Greenville, SC, his grandchildren, Ben LaHay, Adam Rogers, Luke LaHay (Rebekah), Mary Catherine Rogers, Emmett LaHay, Grace LaHay, Caleb LaHay, Marisa Rogers, Seth LaHay and 2 great grandchildren, William and Teddy LaHay.
