

William Bryan Tyson, Jr, husband of Betty Platt Tyson, passed into Glory on February 7, 2023. “Bill” was the son of the late William Bryan Tyson and Frances Hatchell Tyson. He was born in Darlington on October 25, 1937 and raised in Little River, SC. He was predeceased by his brother, James F. Tyson, and son-in-law, J. Samuel Rushing.
Bill graduated from Wampee High School and Wofford College. While at Wofford, he was a member of the ROTC and upon graduating he was commissioned as a Field Artillery Officer in the United States Army. He married his high school sweetheart, Betty Platt Tyson, on June 21, 1959. They then began their married life together in Fort Sill, Oklahoma.
After serving in the Army, Bill spent his entire civilian working career in the textile industry, mostly in the Upstate of South Carolina. In 1980, he founded his own textile company, Bryter Knitting, Inc and also became a partner and later owner in Aberdeen Tricot in Aberdeen, North Carolina.
Growing up on the coast, Bill had a life-long love of water, boating, and fishing. He especially enjoyed hosting his children, grandchildren, and later great-grandchildren at his lake house on Lake Hartwell. He also enjoyed traveling, golfing, square dancing and round dancing. He was a faithful member of Mitchell Road Presbyterian Church and the Disciples Sunday School class.
After being diagnosed with Parkinson's Disease, he was encouraged by his coaches and friends as he participated in classes at Rock Steady Boxing. Rock Steady Boxing is an exercise program that is specifically tailored to those living with Parkinson's.
In addition to his wife of 63 years, Betty, he is survived by his son, Wm. Bryan Tyson, III and wife Elyse, and his daughter, Teri Rushing and husband Chandler Robinson. Also surviving are his grandchildren, Heather Rushing Hanna and husband Chris, Nicole Parsons and husband Dustin, Morgan Rushing Cooke and husband Ross, and Natalie Rushing Humphrey and husband Andrew. He is also survived by his nine great-grandchildren, Rush Hanna, Ella Hanna, Jenna Parsons, Christina Parsons, Addie Cooke, Scarlett Cooke, Alba Millie Cooke, Reed Cooke, and Huckleberry Humphrey.
Services will be held at Mitchell Road Presbyterian Church on Saturday, February 11, 2023. The family will receive visitors from 12:30-1:15 PM with the funeral to follow at 1:30 PM. Burial immediately following at Graceland East Memorial Park, Simpsonville, SC.
In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Mitchell Road Presbyterian Church or Greenville Area Parkinson Society.
