William Carroll Walker

William Carroll Walker, born September 1, 1948, peacefully passed away with his family by his side on August 31, 2026—just two and a half hours before his birthday—following a brave and dignified battle with cancer. He is now free from pain and safely in the arms of the Lord. Throughout his illness, he was surrounded by the unwavering care and comfort of his devoted family, friends, and caregivers.

Joining the United States Navy at just seventeen, he proudly served aboard the USS America. His valiant service during the Vietnam War earned him several commendations, including the National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, and the Navy Unit Commendation.

Beyond his military service, he was a brilliant and dedicated entrepreneur, building and leading multiple successful businesses throughout his life, including Walker Industrial Equipment Company. He was also a skilled contractor who built homes, displaying both mental and manual talents. He was even an inventor, creating and patenting things throughout his life. Above all, he possessed an extraordinary heart. He had an open-door generosity that knew no bounds—always ready to lend a hand, welcome someone who needed a place to stay, or give more than he had to simply because he believed in helping folks. Alongside supporting numerous charities focused on children, the military, and first responders, his instinct was always to give, help, and care for anyone he could.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Roy Spurgeon Walker and Helen Edith Campbell Walker; his brother, Roy Spurgeon Walker, Jr.; his former wife, Cynthia Ann Wright; his sister, Judy Carolyn Chastain; his brother-in-law, James "Jimmy" Jenkins; and his loving little dog, Dottie.

He is survived by his children, Shannon Dionne Carroll (John DeWitt Carroll, Jr.), and Vaughn Lear-Walker (Fiancé Haley Joe Russell); Vaughn's mother, Elizabeth Lear; his grandchildren, William Robert Brandon Foster (Stefanie), and James Austin Foster; his great-grandchildren, William Asher Kain Foster and Ava Rain Foster, all of whom were his greatest pride and joy; his cherished sisters, Jean Jenkins, Frances Wilkinson, and Teresa Stanley (Bobby); his devoted brother, George Walker (Joy); his faithful brother-in-law, Kerry Chastain; and many special nieces, nephews, extended family members, and dedicated caregivers who came together to help care for him in his final days, ensuring he was comfortable and felt deeply treasured. He also leaves behind his loyal canine companion, Bud, who continues to bring warmth and comfort to the family.

Though we find peace in knowing he is with the Lord, our hearts ache with the profound loss of his interesting, complex, and caring presence. He was a man of strong convictions who stood unshakably firm in his beliefs, yet met the world with a rare kindness and steadfast devotion to his family, leaving a void that can never be filled.

A Celebration of Life will be held at Woodlawn Memorial Park, located in the Remembrance Chapel at 1 Pine Knoll Drive, Greenville, South Carolina 29609, on Friday, October 2, 2026, at 4:00 PM. A celebration of life dinner and family gathering will be held afterwards, with the address to follow.

In lieu of flowers, suggested charities are the Cancer Society of Greenville County, the Wounded Warrior Project, the Gary Sinise Foundation, the Tunnel to Towers Foundation, St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, Shriners Hospitals for Children, the American Cancer Society, The American Legion, The Elks, Vets Helping Vets, Samaritan's Purse or a local charity of your choice.
