Winnie Edmondson Buckner, age 80, passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by family, on June 20, 2022, and is now with her Lord and savior, Jesus Christ, after a long battle with pancreatic cancer. Winnie was a true warrior and an inspiration, who fought until the very end.
Winnie was born on April 25, 1942, in Greenville, South Carolina, to Frank and Irene Edmondson. She was preceded in death thirteen years ago by her beloved husband, Joe Earl Buckner, Jr. Joe and Winnie were reunited in heaven in time to celebrate their 58th wedding anniversary on the same day of Winnie’s passing.
Winnie is survived by her son, Joe Earl Buckner, III, her daughter, Allison Buckner Jones, her son-in-law, John A. Jones, and her cherished granddaughters, Chloe Savannah Jones and Josie Victoria Irene Buckner. Winnie is also survived by her brothers, Frank Edmondson and Phillip Edmondson, her brothers-in-law, Charles Buckner (Mary) and James Buckner (Maurica). She was also preceded in death by her father and mother, Frank and Irene Edmondson, her brother, Doyle Edmondson, her sisters, Dinah Apple and Jessica Rion, her father-in-law, Joe E. Buckner, Sr., and her first mother-in-law, Louise Buckner, and her second mother-in law, Joan Buckner.
In her early years, Winnie was head majorette at Greenville Senior High School and thrilled the crowd with her fire baton routine. Winnie was crowned Miss Greenville and went on to be first runner up in the Miss South Carolina pageant where she entertained the audience with her beautiful singing voice. Later, Winnie served as the president of the PTA at Lake Forest Elementary School and also as a board member at Greenville School of Ballet.
Winnie was a devoted wife, Mama and Mimi, who dedicated her entire life to her family, who she loved with all of her heart and soul. Winnie was a second “Mama” to so many throughout the years and she loved them all. If someone touched her heart, that person stayed in her heart forever. She will be dearly missed.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Cancer Society of Greenville County in Winnie’s loving memory.
A visitation for Winnie will be held Monday, June 27, 2022 from 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM at Mackey Funerals and Cremations at Century Drive, 311 Century Drive, Greenville, SC 29607 followed by funeral service at 2:00 PM. A committal service will occur at Woodlawn Memorial Park, 1 Pine Knoll Drive, Greenville, SC 29609.
