OBITUARY
Ann L. Callahan
June 8, 1928 – January 17, 2021
Ann Callahan, 92, passed away peacefully at home on January 17, 2021. She was born in Old Greenwich, Connecticut on June 8, 1928, daughter of George A. and Kathryn H. Layland. Ann devoted her life to her family and to volunteering, most recently for nineteen years at Nathaniel Witherell in Greenwich, CT.
She is survived by her loving husband of 73 years, John Callahan, her sons, Jim (Cathy) of Durango, CO, Dave (Nicki) of Fairfield, CT, her daughters, Jeanne Miller of Cos Cob, CT, and Kerry Callahan of Washington, DC. She also leaves her grandchildren, Paula (Rod) Burr of Atlanta, GA, Mike Callahan of Venice, CA, Courtney Callahan of Durango, CO, Ashley (Zino) Carr of Greenwich, CT, Emily Callahan of Ocala, FL, Kevin Callahan of Chicago, IL and Dan Callahan of Fairfield, CT, Savannah Belle Miller of Cos Cob, CT and also her great-grandchildren Nuala and Cullen Carr of Greenwich, CT and Tyler (Kylee) Gabor of Corinth, TX.
Ann touched countless lives with her compassion, grace, dignity and ready smile. If you knew her, you certainly have your own story to tell. Her faith and love radiated into the hearts of everyone she met. Inside her husband’s wedding ring is engraved, “Because God Made Thee Mine”. The family knows that this is true for them as well, that God made her for each of them. She was a beautiful soul who led a beautiful life.
There will be no calling hours and the service is private. In memory of Ann, visit Tod’s Point, the beach she dearly loved, look to the sky and give thanks.

Mr. Callahan, and all the Callahan "kids"--so sorry to hear this news from my sister. She was a one of a kind person in my childhood--many memories sitting at the kitchen counter on Riverside Avenue with her laughing and joking and teasing. And I don't think I ever saw her without makeup and not a hair out of place! Several memorable trips to feed
the horses on the little farm near North Mianus School. She pulled you in with her smile and beautiful eyes and a need to know all the "news".
Will hold you all close in my heart as you mourn her passing.

Callahan Family,
Ann was a great friend to me when I entered the seminary in the late 70's.
I will always remember her gift of laughter and her welcoming smile.
Always, supportive and willing to help her friends and neighbors.
I appreciated her attendance at my ordination in the Chapel at St. Catherine of Siena church in November of 1981.
Whenever I needed a friend to chat , Ann was always there being
supportive, caring and gracious!
May the Angels bring her to Paradise and may our gracious Lord give her eternal peace and rest.
May deepest condolences to the family.

I was devastated when I learned of Ann’s passing. I met Ann many years ago in the Hub in Cos Cob where we would be going our own way to the post Office, the First National ,or the Food Mart. In greeting each other daily we became friends and I looked forward to seeing her. She was the sweetest, kindest most caring of friends. I send my deepest condolences to John and the family and am so sorry for their loss.

Dear Dave and Family,
I was so touched that Dave called me to let me know of Ann’s passing. She was always Mrs. Callahan to me. I always kept the more respectful and dignified Mrs. or Mr. in front of the great teacher and parent surnames in my life. Ms. Modugno and Mr. Signa, my beloved music teachers from GHS never became Anne and Carmel because they deserved higher titles. To me these people were truly great. They made my life richer and better; Kings and Queens and Baronets and Dukes and Duchesses all. I think Mrs. Callahan did this “richer and better” thing for everyone who ever ran into her. Your day suddenly got a shot of adrenaline and light.
I will admit I occasionally would catch her when she was mad about something, but it was always a kind of Dickensian reaction to somebody doing the wrong thing, not being kind, not taking care of business, failing in the act of loving your fellow human being. Those were rare times.
My experience of Ann Callahan (again......... Mrs. Callahan to me) most of the time was that she was just absolutely THRILLED to have run into me, just THRILLED. And I was immediately informed that I should give her love to a very specific list of people: my mother and father first and foremost and then Tammy and the kids and then: —“How is your sister? What a sweet girl..... please give her my love and how is your brother?? What a lovely man he is! Please give him my love. He knows Dave from your concerts so he’ll remember me and if not, tell him Dave’s Mom sends her love...... How are you and how is your Music??? We just love you and your music. What a special person you are............!!”—And on and on it would go.
EVERY
SINGLE
TIME
WITHOUT
FAIL.
A lesson for humanity. Mrs. Ann C was all dancing light and grace and bubbles of good cheer. May she be head greeter with the Angels in that after place where’er it may be. If there ever was a soul who deserved heaven, it’s Mrs. C!! Xoxo. Love, Rob

Rest in Peace Mrs. Callahan. My son, John, introduced me to her many years ago and our friendship continued after he died at the age of 28. We always looked forward to receiving her annual card and notes. My son, as a young boy, would carry her groceries up to her apartment from the Food Mart in Cos Cob. She loved John and he was especially connected to her warm friendliness extended to him. Thank you for sharing her with us. She gave us much comfort over the years. May God welcome her home!

Dear Jeanne and Savannah,
We were so fortunate to have spent so much time with you "growing up"...If not for our friendship, we never would have had the blessing of knowing "Mama" and Papa". Running into them at CVS in Cos Cob was inevitable and we always got a big hug from both of them! Mama is safely home now and will be remembered by the so many people who were touched by her kindness. Our thoughts and prayers are with you and Papa during this difficult time.

Dear Callahan family,
I was blessed to have met Ann at Nathaniel Witherell.
After numerous chats with her we realized that she knew my family from Old Greenwich and remembered my dad, Joe the mailman.
She was a joy to know and I was able to talk to her about anything.
I missed her greatly, having not seen her for a few years now volunteering.
I tried to stay in touch but hadn’t heard from her for a while and I knew her health was declining.
My heart goes out to all of you, this is a great loss for many.
Your family will remain in my thoughts and prayers and her memory will live on in my heart.
Fondly,

To the entire Callahan Family,
Our hearts and prayers go out to each of you on this deep loss. We first got to know Ann as a customer when she shopped at Porricelli's Food Mart. She had the best smile and the most beautiful conversations would occur. We will never forget her kindness when we lost our first son to SIDS when he was 4 and 1/2 months old, she was the first one to tell us how truly sorry she was and sent us a beautifuul condolence card and gift. When Kings Supermarket took over that location Arnie would continue to see her shop just before Covid hit. She loved his blonde hair and a little on the longer side not too short she would tell him. May the memory of her hold deep in your hearts. Ann was a beautiful soul . We feel so lucky to have crossed paths with her. She surely will be missed!!

Dear John and Children: I was so sad when I opened the paper today and saw that your beautiful wife and mother had died. She was one of the nicest, sweetest person in the whole wide world. She always had a smile for everyone she met! We need more people like her....I don't know if you remember but we lived on Meyer Place and you used to come and play with my kids. Your mother called my mom "Aunt Jaye." I know she will be missed. Sending my prayers and love, Carol
